Jay Leno Garage All-Metal Polish - Review by Mike Phillips

Jay Leno Garage All-Metal Polish - Review by Mike Phillips

    Jay Leno Garage All-Metal Polish

I'm pretty good at polishing metal and specifically aluminum. The Sanger Drag Boat I owned and raced had a lot of polished aluminum running gear. I've probably owned 5 sets or more of aluminum slotted mags, (still have a set), and my artificial leg is polished aluminum. That and whatever I've worked on over the past 20+ years for other people.

Jay Leno Garage All-Metal Polish is thin, watery-like polish that kind of surprised me but the performance is on par with any other popular brand of metal polish be it liquid or paste. The key to using this metal polish is to shake the product well before use and during use to maintain an uniform emulsion of all the magic stuff inside the bottle that turns ugly oxidized aluminum back into a chrome like appearance.

The 1957 Oldsmobile Fiesta Stationwagon has custom, one-off wheels that were designed to look like full size Oldsmobile hubcaps. They are actually a work of art. They are also a dull work of art as it's been a few years since they were properly polished. That's where I come in...

To test this new metal polish out I'm using a tape-line... this will show me the before and after difference.

Shake well, before use and during use...

Pour some out onto an applicator pad, This is a microfiber applicator pad for more aggressive cleaning use cotton terry cloth.

Here's where you do what I call,

Putting some passion behind the pad

    Rub rub rub....

Yep... that's oxidized aluminum.... looks blackish on the pad and on your wiping towels....

Use a clean towel to wipe off the residue....

Remove most of the residue and then either turn to a clean side for the final wipe or better yet, have extra clean microfiber towels for the final wipe.

    Lets remove the tape....

And now take a look at the results.... Here you can see a visible difference, the before side is opaque and the after side is clear which makes it look darker but in actuality it's cleared-up...

Don't look at my finger... look at the reflection of my finger....

Huge difference and that was just a little rubbing by hand....

To speed things up I switched over to machine for this test wheel and the other three wheels....

Here you can see the machine pattern.... (machines take all the work out of the project)

And after about an hour or so of machine and hand polishing here's the results...

    Clean, shiny polished aluminum wheels...

Time to stick a fork in this project and call it done!

The wheels came out great. Mike, what pad and polisher combo did you use?

Thanks. I just did a quickie polish to them but even a quickie polish made a dramatic before and after difference and added a ton of shine back to the wheels to go with the rest of the car.

The pads were the Lake Country 3.5" ThinPro white polishing pads.

    Can't share the polisher yet.

Great job polishing these custom one-off wheels on this awesome looking Fiesta Station Wagon. They're definitely a work of art
