    Restoring a Polished Matte Finish

    Hi All,

I'm looking to restore a small polished spot on a matte black motorcycle frame. I had a small blemish where a cable was rubbing on the frame and after rerouting the cable, I attempted to correct the spot using Meguiars ultra polish followed by ultimate wax I removed the small blemish but now I've got a glossy section on my frame. If anyone has any information or suggestions, please post. I'll try and post a few photos tonight.

    Cheers!

    You removed a surface finish:
I know of no product, save a re-spray,
that will put it back on.

I'm not sure if it matters...but the matte surface is clear coated. I was thinking that maybe there was a way to bring down the shine a bit.

    If it's a matte clear-coat...doubt it.

    IMO:
The more it's rubbed on, the shinier it'll get.

That's what I figured...I believe it is called eggshell clear. I think that's got just a small amount of shine to it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My best guess would be to try a paint safe apc to strip what wax and polishing oils may still be on there. Past that there isn't anything I know of since polishing a matte surface is actually leveling a surface that isn't supposed to be level.

Would it be worth lightly rubbing the area with something like a Scotchbrite pad?

I second Mike, or like 4000 grit, just something to knock the shine off.

Thanks guys. I'll try the sctochright. I think I'll start with the grey. I think that's the finest grade I have.

I think the scotch brite method did a good job cutting the shine. The area no longer sticks out like a sore thumb. I took a few before pics but I couldn't get any good after photos. Hopefully we'll have a sunny day and I'll get to check the results again soon. Thanks guys!
