Paint Condition Category #9 Unstable
Paint Condition Category #9 Unstable
From the definitions I wrote for my first how-to book,
Page 37 - Paint Condition Categories
9: Unstable
This category is for older, single stage paints that have been exposed to the sun for a long enough period of time that the pigments have become unstable. That is even if you remove the oxidation and gorge the paint with some type of polishing oils, any original color that is restored is only a temporary fix and when the paint is exposed to the sun or after a few days pass the color fades back to where it was before you started.
If you have never had the experience and pleasure of working on a lot of older cars with single stage paint you probably have not come across paint that is unstable.
While it mostly happens to cars painted with old school solvent-evaporation paints like Lacquers and Enamels, it can happen to a modern, Urethane single stage paint too especially if the car is neglected, washed with detergent soaps and exposed to the sun a lot.
It's never fun if it's your own car or if you have to be the bearer of bad news to a customer.
Kind of the same boat but not category as Clear Coat Failure
There are some cars you cannot fix
If after reading this you ever come across a car with paint in category #9, please post the picture to this thread or e-mail them to me and I'll upload them to our gallery and then add them to this thread.
Thank you!
