Using a DA on a car with vinyl stripes, graphics, panels

    Hi, new member here...

I have a 2011 Mustang MCA Edition, which has vinyl side stripes and rear decklid blackout panel.

I just got my Porter Cable and I am ready to get to work, but one question remains -

Is it safe to tape off the graphics without fear of the tape peeling back the graphics when removed and/or leaving adhesive residue? I am using Meguiar's detailing tape.

If taping the graphics is not recommended, what is the best approach to using a DA to polish surfaces that are adjacent to the graphics?

Since your car is fairly new I would assume that the vinyl is in good condition which would make it sturdy enough to take on tape. Just be careful in the removal process and try to lay more of the tape on the paint with less being on the vinyl. You should just be concerned with residue forming at the edge of the vinyl, and try to use a narrower tape if you have it at your disposal.

Good thread, and thanks truckbutt for the photo.

I'm looking to do my Mustang this summer. Is there any special precautions you took with the raised body lines (the high points on the door, and the faceting on the hood)?

I've read that high points/sharp angles have thinner paint so I'm always careful not to dwell too long or apply too much pressure on those areas. I've also found that the Mustang's paint is very soft and I can do most correction with a polishing pad or light cutting pad.
