Alrighty.....I am now thinking of just converting my Griot's 6" DA into a 3". I'd like to have an extension between the DA and the backing plate so I don't bump the side of the DA into my paint finish while I am working it.

Can anyone please help me and tell me exactly what parts I need not only to attach a 3" backing plate, but also some type of extension to get the pad away from the DA itself?

Thanks!

Not recommended on a DA to extend. It's a 5/8th thread if I recall right. Good luck and don't expect your warranty to help you out if you do this "conversion"

You can do an extension by using these components:
Lake Country thread adapter
Rotary extension
3" rotary backing plate

I used this as my 3" machine for awhile, but nothing beats the Rupes 75e and Pe-8 combo.

As an alternative, you could wrap the Shroud with something to prevent, or lessen its ability to mar or scrape paint if you accidently bump it while using it.

There was a company selling what was called a "PC Guard" which was designed for the Porter Cable DA, but would probably fit the 6" Griots as well.

All it was, was a strip of Peel and Stick Foam Rubber Tape. One could no doubt do similar with a trip to a Home Improvement Store, or at least maybe wrap the Shroud with some Electrician's Tape, or?

Better than having Metal bang parts like Mirrors, etc.

This sounds like what I need! I tried to locate all the parts and couldn't figure out exactly which to get. Could you please help me?

i have never really felt safe using an extension on the DA. IME it comes loose and i just cringe at the thought of it flying off and damaging the paint...

Are these the three items I need to convert my Griot's 6" to 3"?

Extension:
Double-Sided Pad Rotary Adapter, (http://www.autogeek.net/double-sided-pad-adapter.html)

Adapter:
D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11 (http://www.autogeek.net/daadapter58x11.html)

Backing Plate:
3 Inch Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate, da backing plate, random orbital backing plate (http://www.autogeek.net/3inch-dual-action-backing-plate.html)

IMO there should be no issue at all. I have converted my PC7424XP to a 1" to 4" DA. All you need are the adapters and backing plates. The PC and GG are similar in terms of BP and adapters.

I have been using my PC that way for over a year and no issues. It is actually easier to correct as there is less mass for the DA to move around. I know I have posted here on how to do it.

I actually show how you can use a 1" BP too. I have all the parts and products listed in that post. I am at work and don't have that infor.

Again, it's fairly easy and you will enjoy a new 3" DA

It's a 5/16th thread..5/8th is a rotary thread.

Using a rotary 3" backing plate with a rotary/DA extension will make your Griot 6" a little tippy. You would be better off with a 3.5" DA backing plate and use 4" pads.:props:

I didnt say you couldnt use the 3 inch plate sir, I said the extension is not recommended. I use a 3 on mine now that I have a FLEX but I would not EXTEND the 3 inch plate. Get my drift? :dblthumb2:

Here is the links for what i used:

D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11 (http://www.autogeek.net/daadapter58x11.html)

Buff and Shine Rotary Backing Plate Extension (http://www.autogeek.net/buf-1400.html)

Flex-Foam HD Rotary Backing Plate, spot buff backing plate, 3" backing plate, circular polisher backing plate (http://www.autogeek.net/rotary-3inch-backing-plate.html)

I like the Flex foam over harder BP.

No need for speed over 3.5 with this setup as well. The Griots make quick work with a 3" setup.

When using a rotary BP with DA pads...just make sure you watch the heating of the Velcro.

Sometimes the rotary BP's have longer hooks that don't play well with DA pads.
