I was detailing an Infiniti M45 for a good friend of mine, in fact I did it for him last year. It was going great until I tried filling a scratch he had with some clear touch up I had for my car. Problem was, the clear wasn't all that clear and it was slightly grayish colour. I thought I could wet sand it smooth and it would look O.K. I touched it up twice and then wet sanded the area flat...didn't take much doing at all. When I compounded it with UCL and a wool pad, the area started getting dark. The paint got warm but not hot. I kept shooting it with water just to be sure. The more I tried to correct the area, the worse it looked. I don't think I burned the paint b/c the clear is smooth. The discolouration is beneath. I haven't called my friend yet b/c I want to see my options. I am thinking of putting some touch up (silver) on top and sealing it. The other alternative is to paint the panel which I do not want to do, but it's not worth messing up the friendship. What's it look like from the pics? Thanks.

Rich ..its one of 2 things...

First ..the clear touch up may not have dried enough and it flowed when buffed and it mixed with the compound and left that stain look...try something like prep sol to wipe the area or a cleaner type polish ...do lighly by hand..to see if it cleans up any...

Second...it burned thru ....

no friendship can be tainted by something so small...im sure a rotary and some good compounding touch up skills will fix it...money is no comparison to freindship and if a REAL bodyshop needs to fix it..ur talkin bout pennies

hell if my friend said he wanted to do something for me and accidentally messed it up...its the thought that counts...and hey...if it cost 100$ - 200$ hell $2,000 all i say to myself is..hey..a few more days of work and everything will be back to normal

dont stress it...in the end...its fixable

You struck through the clear, no doubt about it

Yup..I did. Tried to clean it up with a solvent:no go. All the more reason for me to dig out my Langka and practice using it. He's picking it up tonight and I have arranged for a body shop I trust to look at it for me. He's not upset but I sure am!! Bloody Hell!!

ooooh dosn't look good richy, I did that to a scrap panel. Went through the clear coat and that's exactly how it looked. After wet sanding a few panels I started to get really cautious about wet sanding, oh it's a blast went sanding but I quickly learned that I need a paint gauge before I go a head and wet sand. Oh I got a mechanical paint gauge cheap and it works just as good as the digintal gauge too only about under $100.00

Sorry to hear about the incident my friend, but you know what live and learn right...so don't worry about it...asier said then done, I can totally understand what your going through now it's not easy letting go of a mistake no matter how small it is.
