Hi Folks,
I just bought an 08 Accord, Tafetta White / Clearcoat. I don't think the previous owner ever waxed it. It is heavily oxidized and I want to get it back to the finish it should be.

I have for product: Dupont Red rubbing compound, Dupont White rubbing compound, Meguiars Fine Cut cleaner, Meguiars Clay Bar System, Meguiars Pre-Wax Cleaner, Meguiars Carnauba Wax

I also have a dual action orbital polisher.

Is there something better out there productwise or technique that I can use without having to apply some of these products that may be too abrasive and do more damage than good.

I'm thinking of some kind of oxide remover product followed by clay bar, prewax cleaner, hand glaze then carnauba. I came across something called l'oxide emulsion but don't know if that's recommended or readily available. What ever it is it has to be clearcoat safe.

Thanks
Chris

I haven't heard of oxidation removers like that for clear coated paint, and it they worked it would probably need at least a polish step afterwards any way.

Clay products, compounds, polishes, cleaner waxes, and AIOs are oxidation removers

I would clay the surface well and then try the fine cut cleaner with the DA. Move up in aggressiveness from there if you are not happy with the results.

What is the Meguiars Pre-Wax Cleaner product you have?

Do you have any photos of the car and its current condition?

Here are a few great article to read through that will set you on the right track

Get some good pads for the dual orbital, and a quality compound and polish. I like Wolfgang Uber + Carpro Reflect combo, on lake county hydrotech pads ( blue cut, orange polish ). That combo worked great on my 2008 Honda CR-V.

I know of no product that can bring clear coat back after it has oxidized.

Your process is way off. You would need to wash and dry paint, clay bar and decon your paint. Then polsih first and see what happens. Then if that does not work up in aggressiveness. Then wax.

I am a bit confused how you came to that conclusion of using all that stuff, also, post your dual action polisher you are using

You should be able to clear up that oxidation just fine.. Start by washing the car, then use the claybar kit, then either use the Megs Fine Cut Cleaner or better yet buy some Megs Ultimate Compound and use the proper pads.

Does your white paint look something like this? No shine, rough to the touch? If so, it shouldn't be too hard to restore the shine.

Paints with clearcoat don't oxidize. Without seeing a photo, you're most likely describing clearcoat failure which can't be fixed by polishing. Honda and Mitsubishi have had very crummy clearcoat for the past decade, and clearcoat failure is very common.

Some good reading by our own Mike:

^Good point.

Does it look evenly cloudy or dull, or is it splotchy?

Pictures might help but white can be kind of hard to capture.

I worked a small spot, all by hand, and tried a few things. Claybar, prewax cleaner, little megs fine cut cleaner, a little white and red compound ( I don't really like using that stuff though). It came back to like-new.

I think Ill do the following:
Wash thoroughly
Clay bay and de-tar
Megs Ultimate Compound with my DA polisher
Hand Glaze (3M)
Megs Carnauba

That should do it.

Thanks

Paints with clearcoat don't oxidize.

I learned something new today.. My mistake.
