I detailed my father-in-law's '04 GMC Sierra. It had never been waxed. I used Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover/orange LC 5.5 flat pad on a PC 7424xp as a first step.

Followed it up with Pinnacle Cleansing Lotion/LC white pad. Applied #845 as the LSP.

As you can see, it's far from perfect although much improved(again, neglected paint that hadn't been touched in 11 yrs).

Wondering if the yellow LC 5.5 flat pad would have been a better choice for the 1st step? The Advanced Swirl Remover/orange pad was the most aggressive combo I had.

Anyone use the yellow pad? Or other suggestions that would improve my results?

This is the importance of a test spot! Only by working with a couple of product and pad combinations and some different arm speeds/passes, can you discover what will work best.

If that was the most aggressive combo you had, then you could have tried a couple more passes or slower arm speed to see if that got rid of the remaining defects. You could also be seeing some deeper defects that you shouldn't go chasing. You could opt to try for a microfiber cutting pad, which really ups the aggressiveness on the PC.

Either way it looks like a huge improvement!

I understand that the car is neglected, but going with a yellow pad on the entire care would be a very aggressive and I suspect unnecessary. Also instead of following up with Pinnacle Cleansing Lotion with a white pad; I would have recommended Pinnacle Finishing Polish with a white to complement your correction step Swirl Remover and orange pad. The reason being the Cleansing Lotion is just a prewax paint cleaner with light fillers cleaner for a quick maintenance on cars in good condition. Finishing Polish is for the spit shine. I know some paint cleansers can correct with a white pad but I still recommend that combo. Plus if you are looking to go more aggressive I recommend there Compound with the finishing polish instead.

In my experience the yellow foam pads are very aggressive but also tend to cause excessive micro-marring. If you need something with more cutting ability check out the Meg's microfiber pads. The cutting discs seem to have more cut than yellow foam, and also finish significantly better with less haze.
