Porsche 993...at 20 years

I dropped the engine and transmission to replace gaskets, seals and a few other external engine related items and while they are out, I might as sell give the engine and transmission bay as well as suspension components a thorough cleaning.

Swish Facto AT30 Aircraft, Mass Transit and Vehicle Cleaner. (water based degreaser used on underside and wheels)

And lets go all out and refinish all metal brackets that have even the slightest bit of corrosion on them.

And when I had nothing better to do and needed a break, the wheels got a thorough cleaning, including the back sides, especially the narrow channels in the spokes as well as the hub...

No rebuild necessary due to the low mileage. It needed a clutch pressure plate due to it being noisy (diaphram spring creaks/grawks at pivot points) when applying the clutch. I bought it that way back in 2009 but I would not pass up a great find for little issues like that. It'll get new cam chain cover rubber seals; the original ones are weeping a tad. To do those, it is best to drop the drivetrain, so I might as well go all out on the gaskets and seals as well as other things that are hard to get to in an extremely tight engine compartment, for example, such as the oil temperature and pressure sensors.

No rush on any of this since I am not one to slap things together. I have more details that will get attention.

The underside is as clean as the topside. Original paint and completely stock.

Just as in painting a car, preparation work is everything.

I did not rely on the metal refinishers to clean and prep all my metal brackets.

I stripped all of them in muriatic acid (concrete cleaner), then rinsed them in cold water and dried them immediately before placing each in a zip-lock bag (squeezing the air out before zip-locking them).

I would take photos of a batch of brackets that I took in to the refinisher so that they know what belongs to whom.

A batch to get yellow zinc plated would run me a bit more than the cost of one bracket alone.

It is important that the stripping in acid is done outdoors and with a good wind blowing (you stand up-wind) or better yet, use a professional mask with filters as I did. The fumes are deadly.

What a beautiful and well kept car. The 993 is definitely my favorite of the bunch. I really hope to own an air cooled 911 sometime in the future. :)
