I'm going to buy a GG6 for my 12 year old son to start learning with and I will use on occasion. For myself I would like to use 3" or 4" pads to do pillars and some touch up spots. Would 3"or 4"pads be best and what brand/style would y'all recommend?

Hey Bud,

The best bet would be to get him using the GG6 converted to a 5" System. That is a simple backing plate swap. This would give him safe operation with effective paint correcting ability. Using the GG6 with a 3" System (3" or 4" Pads) focused a lot of energy and torque in a smaller footprint. The pad rotation would be very high! Delivering very fast paint correction. My son is 10 and I wouldn't put that in his hands. There is high probability he may burn an edge...particularly when using with a Micro Fiber Cutting pad.

Our Foam Pads are bulletproof. They will not delaminate. The foam pads feature reticulated foam for long lasting durability and cool polishing.

Ranked from most aggressive to least...

5" Micro Fiber FAST Cutting Pad- one super sweet pad. Conformability and ultra-fast paint correction. This is a hidden gem in the line and one many haven't even been exposed to. It is killer!!

5.5" Orange Correcting Foam Pad- Cuts light to moderate defects and finishes out exceptionally well.

5.5" Black Finishing Foam Pad- excellent for light defect removal and finishes out great! Can be used with All In Ones- AIO

5.5" Red Waxing Pad- excellent for spreading waxes and sealants evenly for fast wipe-off and reduce product consumption.

These pads offer conformability to contours which will benefit a novice. They are far more forgiving. Another option is to pair our BOSS Pads (http://www.autogeek.net/griots-boss-5-inch-pads.html)with the GG6...something few have been exposed to yet, but will once the word is out. Hope to do a write up on that soon.

The three foams are available in 3" and 4" too. If you still wanted to go that route, I'd recommend this backing plate from Autogeek:
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/autogeek_2272_109698365 (http://www.autogeek.net/3inch-dual-action-backing-plate.html)LC-43-073DA

Another drawback with this ...the plate is smaller than the counterbalance shroud. That could potentially expose small fingers to come in contact with the counterbalance, causing injury. Please be aware of that! We currently do not recommend the use of the 3" System on that tool for that reason. It will perform excellent, but user beware...it hurts like heck to engage a finger with a counterbalance. Ask me how I know

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you've got any questions. PS, Thank you for picking up a GG6! We appreciate it

Everyone has a preference.

I use mostly Lake Country Flat pads.

I have a Rupes that will prove that nonsense false pretty quickly... Now I own a GG6 and a GG3 Vibrator, and have a bunch of GG pads and I'll be the first to recommend your stuff, but statements like this? Bit of a stretch.

Forgot that postings on forums can be taken literally. By "bulletproof", I was speaking in relative context. The reference was to the fact the pads do not delaminate, due to the lamination process. All buffing pads are consumable and eventually deteriorate, whether foam or microfiber.

But thanks for the positive comments! It's good to keep everyone honest.

As for the "Long-Throw" Rupes, pad deterioration comes from a few factors:

The weight of the pad
Does it have a center hole- if not, thicker pads will dish due to excessive heat build-up in the foam
The lamination method which bonds loop to pad material- if hot melt glue is used, it is likely the heat of a long-throw will eventually cause the hot-melt glue to give way.
Have a fantastic day:dblthumb2:

Flat pads are my fav too.

I wouldnt put 3" pads on a 6" polisher when they make a 3" polisher. Im not saying to go buy a $100 polisher if you dont have enough use for it.

What I do with small areas is put a 3" or 4" pad on a backing plate in my battery operated variable speed drill. Lower speed is your friend here.

Jeff, I have 2 questions: Why would you go down to a 5 inch backing plate/pads from the 6 inch? And, if one were to use the new BOSS pads with the GG6, would you also recommend the interflex pad to add to the thickness to be similar to the GG6 pads? Would you also recommend going down to the 5 inch if you use the BOSS pads? (ok, 3 questions :-)

Jeff thanks for all the info! I didn't think about the potential danger of using a small pad. What would you recommend for smaller areas like pillars and such? I've thought about the Mini Rupes and y'all's GG3 but the power of the 3" has me a little concerned. I got to try out my new G15 today and was totally blown away. AWSOME machine....please develop a Mini BOSS! :)

I think Jeff was refering to the 3" pads with a 2 7/8" backing plate being dangerous. The GG6 works fine with a 3.5" backing plate and 4" pads--use mine this way all the time for bumpers, pillars etc
