Very Light, Light, and Moderate Contamination

When it comes to contamination and claying, when should you use a very fine grade vs. a fine grade vs. a medium grade? What is considered very light, light, and moderate contamination?

I had a white Focus ST show up the other with horrible rail dust all over it. I applied the same logic as correcting paint. Least aggressive first. My Fine grade nanoskin pad worked perfectly and I didn't need the Medium grade one.

After you Iron-X the vehicle run the Baggie test to see how bad it feels. In most cases a fine grade will handle the bulk of the contaminants. I have started using a fine grade nanoskin and it takes care of most contaminants. Occasionally I pull out a fine grade regular clay to hit tougher spots. On certain paint I think regular fine clay is stronger than the nanoskin. But the nanoskin saves so much time.
