Are the Meguiar's DA Microfiber Discs required to use their special backing plate? I currently have the Porter Cable 7424 with the backing plate included in this kit:

Porter Cable 7424 Complete Starter Kit, Porter Cable 7424 buffer, Porter Cable power tools (http://www.autogeek.net/porter-cable-7424-kit.html)

Also, how much of a step above the Hex Logic Yellow Pad is microfiber as far as cutting power goes?

Some background on why I'm looking at these.. I'm working on getting rotary buffer swirls out of my car (2012 Caddy CTS) which based on what I've read and experienced so far, has a very hard clear coat.

I've practiced my technique using the Porter Cable 7424XP on one of my higher mileage cars (1998 Honda Accord) and had great success using M105 & Hex Logic Orange Pads followed by M205 and the Hex Logic White Pad.

I tried the same technique (but started with the White Pad + m205) using a test spot on the Caddy. I focused the test area on the swirls but had minimal success.. So far, I've gone as far as using M105 and the Hex Logic Orange Pad...I'm planning on trying M105 and the Hex Logic Yellow Pad tonight. Depending on if those results are not satisfactory, I'm going to look at ordering microfiber pads next.

Yes it is recommended to use Meguiar's 5" plate with their mf discs. It was designed specifically for their pads.

Yes, any fiber pad will offer more cut than a foam pad. In this case the fibers are part of the system and they are cutting the paint as well.

If you are going to get started on the mf pads your best bet is to go with Meguiar's Microfiber kit. This way you have everything you need on hand to get started. You will also need either a pad brush to clean the mf disc after each panel or use compressed air.

Here is an excellent review and how to put together by Rasky. If you are new to the mf system this is a must read.

It's recommended because the edges are tapered and the velcro on the backing plate exactly matches the velcro on Meguiar's MF pads.

I cover the different types of velcro in my how-to book,

The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine (http://www.autogeek.net/how-to-create-a-show-car-shine-book.html)

As well as thousands of other topics. There's never been a how-to book on polishing car paint that's more thorough and detailed than this book.

But to answer your question... the Meguiar's MF pads will attach to a LC backing plate.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't the Hex Logic pads about 1' thick?

When using these pads have you marked your backing plate to make it easy for you to monitor pad rotation?

The most aggressive pad in the world won't remove paint defects if it's not rotating on a PC style polisher. That's a fact.

IF you want a pad that rotates great and cuts fast, get the new 5.5" Meguiar's maroon foam cutting pad. See my full write-up here and Camaro paint is similar to Cadillac paint....

The Meguiar's Microfiber Discs require "micro-hook" hook & loop interface for optimal performance. What happens with tall hooks, is that there is too much "play" in the system, and it generates too much friction induced heat.

Just about any fiber (micro, wool, etc) media will tend to be more aggressive than most types of foam. The microfiber also has much more surface area, and abrasive potential compared to the relative smooth surface of the foam pad.

In the case of the yellow hex logic, it aggressiveness is more a result of it's density. The density translates into resistance to compression. This is where the abrasives in the polish have greater corrective abilities, depending on how hard you compress the pad.

The yellow hex logic should be able to cut the paint faster than the orange. It's surface texture is just slightly rougher than the orange. In my experience, the orange initially feels stiffer, but softens up once product is applied.

Also, being that the Yellow, and Orange (as well as the White, and red) pads are closed cell foams, they all finish really well.

Thanks, I did mark the backing plate so I'm able to see that I'm getting good rotation. Looks like I have to reading to do.

Is D300 + Mequiar's MF Cutting Pad much stronger than M105 + Yellow Foam Pad?

I tried searching this and found mixed answers.

Not stronger but it's a better combo. D300 on MF dusts less than M105 on any pad. D300 is very user friendly and can also be sued with foam.

I just used D300 on the new thin burgundy cutting disc with excellent results.

In my experience microfiber is stronger than the yellow hex logic. While that pad is positioned as their most aggressive foam, I find it to be kind of soft. It almost feels like stiff memory foam.

In my testing, I used the Yellow Hex, and Rupes Blue Microfiber on a PC with m105 against 1000 sanding marks.

The microfiber set up easily bested the yellow hex logic in that scenario.

I use the lake country plate with the Meg's microfiber pads no issues here.
