View Full Version : Polishing Tesla paint questions

I've read that the Model S is painted with a water based paint to make it more environmentally friendly. On the Tesla forums there are people paranoid about taking it through car washes because the paint could be fragile. I'm more concerned about what will happen when I try to cut it. Does anybody have any experience working with this paint? I've got a client who just took delivery of a new 85P Model S (got to drive it yesterday. Holy crap...) and it needs some love. I'm almost thinking about just claying it and slapping a coat of Wolfgang on it because I don't want to do any unnecessary polishing on it. Am I being too paranoid or can the paint handle a light scrub? The last thing I want is to scrub the paint off this car.

Found these in a quick search. They might be helpful and there are quite a few more too. You might PM the posters in those threads and ask for some tips.

JSMOOTH has done hundreds.

If you can't find em here, go over to your old stomping ground (the sister site to this)

Thanks for those threads and for the tip on JSMOOTH. I'll hunt him down and pick his brain. The threads didn't mention much about the paint, but it looks like they correct fairly easily. I'm thinking this one is worth just hitting with Wolfgang Uber. It is white and brand new, so it really doesn't need much correction. My fear is just in polishing it too much. I wouldn't have even been worried if I hadn't read about owners who were afraid to take them to car washes in fear of high pressure water taking the paint off.

Thanks for the help, guys! This is why AG still rocks! No matter how long you've been doing this or how much you think you know, you'll always find guys here who know more about it than you do. :) Sometimes I feel like a noob and not the 18 year veteran of this business that I am. I'm glad people are willing to help anybody here. :)

(edit: Hey, check it out! Lucky triple 7 post! :) )
