I'm just curious. Does anyone else open the doors trunk and hood to make it easier getting up to the edges

Yes. Not so much doors but hoods and trunks.

depends on the vehicle, sometimes i make the edge of the other panel. i tape mostly doors to avoid getting compounding dust on the interior.

To polish my trunk I have it slightly opened. I put two water bottles to keep the trunk lip opened. For the hood I typically don't have to. To polish the rocker without burning the door's clearcoat, I open it and cover the opening with garbage bags.

I've only ever taken similar steps on my own cars (or those of close family). For clients I would only go that extra two miles if I knew my time would be compensated. Most customers don't appreciate the lengths to which we'd be ready to go, and just want their cars to appear clean and shiny.
