Buffing out swirls with rotary buffer

Hey guys I am having trouble finishing up swirl free with the rotary buffer. Yesterday I worked on a black car. I cut it with a yellow medium foam pad, medium compound, 2200 rpm. I then buffed it with a blue soft polishing pad, polish, 1800rpm. I then finished with a hand wax. The car was brought into the sun and I would say 80% of it looked good but there were still some swirl lines and hologram marks on the hood and a little on the doors. This happened before on a black vehicle I did. Basically why did my polishing step not remove the swirls from the cutting step?? Should I have used more pressure in the polishing step? What sort of rpms should I use and how slow in the passes should I use?

Have you considered finishing with a DA?

Agreed. Most people just finish with a DA.

It's pretty hard to get totally swirl / hologram free with a rotary..

1800 rpm is pretty high for finishing

I guess it has been quite a while since I went over 1500rpm with a compound although I accept some do work best at higher speeds. Generally I would use lowest speeds when using a finishing polish.
