How big of a part does claying play in the whole 5-step detailing. I Used ultimate compound on a small test spot and it does look brighter then other spots but still has swirls. Did without claying but did wash the area. Applyed by hand. Would it be safe to say that the paint still had contaminants which will do more bad then good?

I think the goal of claying is to have a clean (free of surface contaminants) surface on which to start your other steps. A clean surface should allow for better bonding of other products (waxes, sealants) as well as allow compounds and polishes to work as they should with nothing getting in the way.

Perhaps you'll find this helpful:

Auto detailing clay, detail clay bar, clay lubricant, Pinnacle Poly Clay, Wolfgang, auto detail clay, meguiar's detailing clay, auto clay bar (http://www.autogeek.net/detailing-clay-bar.html)

Baggie test done yet?

If you do the test & still feel the contaminants then:
1- clay or similar (ie Nanoskin )
2-IronX or a similar fallout remover.
