has anyone here lost interest in detailing?

I have for the most part. I still wash it properly, but that's the most I put into it as well as a spray wax every once in awhile. Not interested in fixing swirls or scratches anymore as the paint is too delicate..

The reason I lost interest is my cars paint, it just sucks. The roof's clear is failing, the hoods clear is showing signs of failure and was backed into denting the front lip, the right front fender is just massively jacked where only a full repaint can fix it, all four door handles the clear coat has delaminated, both mirrors are faded and discolored, the rear bumper was a junk repaint from day one, the spoiler has some sort of fiberglass cracking leaving thousands of small cracks under the paint.

From a distance it looks nice detailed, but upclose I can see all the flaws. I have considered getting a full repaint, but the cost is not worth it to me. I would rather use that amount of money as a down payment for a new-used car.

Sigh.. Im almost praying my car catches on fire and is totaled just so I can get something else.. Or that someone deeply keys the entire car so I could have my insurance pay for full repaint or something.

Man sorry to hear that. I can feel for you on that one from past experience. I do believe you will be rejuvenated once you get a new used car. You will get back the passion.

That is what happened to me when I got a new car. Long Story Short my buddies wife side swiped the hood and side of my DD. It would cost more to repair than what the car was worth.

Part of me wants to part with my car just to get something new and different. Been looking at c4/c5 vettes lately and would like one of those to be my next ride. But my car has been so dang reliable(and its fully paid off) that it seems foolish to get rid of it.

there was a period where i was in-between main vehicles and i had a moderate mileage loaner Mazda Tribute from my broker while my new car came in. my interest in detailing waned quite a bit at that point.

then it happened again a few years later. i had a new car bought back by the manufacturer and needed a temporary main vehicle until i figured out what i wanted to get next, so the same guy leased me an old Frontier. same thing happened - had no interest. i had two beaters, essentially.

you have to have a canvas, bottom line.

My Touareg & the track car gets more attention. The boat gets detailed more often to eliminate dried blood & salt spray;Mostly a nessesity.

I need the wife to let us get a 5 car garage, the 3 car just isn't enough anymore. Maybe if I could keep all the cars inside I would keep up all the cars.

Coatings make life much easier which allow me more time for fishing and less time to detail.

I tried opticoat but it never stuck to my car for some reason. I now just wash my car once a once and usually spray wax it every or every other wash.

Nissan paint is awful, I've seen so many with clear coat failure. My guess is the company is maximizing profits by using inferior materials

It may be an eye sore for you up close but it's not a rust bucket or something with mismatched panels. Sure the Nissan paint quality may suck but a reliable and fuel efficient (used) car is usually hard to come by, aside from Honda's. A lot of people would be happy with your Nissan. With it being paid for, I'd drive it until the wheels fell off while saving up for something really nice.

realistic approach to "detailing".

Although I think it's a good thing to give the vehicles a polish every now and then...I have basically decided to do just what is needed...rather than going over the top. Especially during the Winter season: As, nobody notices anyway; and, within two days the vehicles are filthy again.

Car dealerships are always eager to take your old car in a trade-in...figuring you will accept less money for it in exchange for avoiding the hassle of selling it yourself.

They'll just have your former pride & joy
taken over to the auction house.

You should see my daily driver! 1997 Honda Accord. No clear on the hood or right fender, peeling clear in the front bumper, CC/Paint failure on the roof, hubcaps peeled, interior trashed, windows make noise, no A/C, no cruise. But it's paid for and I only drive it to and from work. It has 155k and I'm keeping it until the wheels fall off.

I guess that is one nice thing about winter...I'm usually crapped out on detailing by the fall. And like Bob said, I don't do more than I really have to with my own cars through the winter. I'll run them through the touchless every few weeks and do some rinseless washes with some Aquawax, wipe down the interior from time to time, etc. But in the spring, I'm always ready and eager to get some cars in the garage and make them look pretty!
