2014 Car Review - Autogeek's Detailing Boot Camp Cars! (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-saturday-detailing-101/88012-2014-car-review-autogeek-s-detailing-boot-camp-cars.html)

My passion is and has always been for detailing what I simply call,

Special Interest Vehicles

A Special Interest Vehicle, or SIV doesn't have to be an old car, or a classic, or a muscle car, streetrod or exotic. It can be any of these types of cars but the actual way I define a special interest vehicle goes like this,

When walking through a parking lot, if a car makes you turn your head twice, or better yet, veer out of your normal path of travel and actually walk over to the car in question so you can check it out up close... chances are, this car qualifies as a special interest vehicle.

I find working on cool and interesting cars a lot more rewarding and memorable. I also think the majority of the people that attend our detailing classes will think and feel the same way.

So instead of acquiring normal, every day, daily drivers for training purposes, I put a lot of energy into networking with local car guys that I've earned their trust and do my best to obtain special interest vehicles for our classes.

And history has proven that I'm right and that is the people that attend my classes love the experience of not just learning the widest selection of types of tools out of any detailing class available in the world, but to do so on these unique and interesting cars. Of course, I always include a few regular daily drivers for topics like Production Detailing and Interior Detailing, etc.

Class cars for 2014
Below are the cars used for the 2014 Detailing Boot Camp Classes plus the links to the write-ups showing the cars being worked on in our classes. I'm sorry to say that not ever car gets a full write-up showing the before, during and after pictures as processing the volume of pictures taken at our classes is very time intensive. But in all the threads there will be a good collection of pictures for at least some of the cars that have been through our classes.

1956 Nomad Bel Air

This is a numbers matching, all original 1956 Chevrolet Nomad. The paint is single stage lacquer and filled with swirls and scratches. It has won first place in its class at the All Chevy's Winter Nationals for 7 years in a row and that is with swirled out paint.

We used this Nomad to teach the class the easiest and simplest tool used for machine polishing, the Porter Cable 7424XP.

You can see just how bad the paint started out in this article.

1970 El Camino
This is a fire breathing bad azz 635 cubic inch Big Block Chevy powered muscle car that we used the Rupes Bigfoot polishers, pads and products to de-swirl and create a perfect finish for the application of the Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Paint Coating which gives paint that glassy look.

1947 Ford Convertible Streetrod
This car was used to teach the techniques for using the Cyclo Polisher to remove overspray paint, swirls and scratches.

2006 Ford Expedition
We used this to learn how to chemically decontaminate paint using Iron X and then how to do production detailing using a one-step cleaner/wax.

The second detailing boot camp class is always held the first weekend in May

This was a very unique class in that I didn't try to get 3 Chevy Impalas it just fell into place on it's own. Pretty cool though especially considering the 1958 Impala was just purchased for $150,000.00 two days before the class.

1958 Impala Convertible
While to the average person the black paint looked good in the sun you could see rotary buffer holograms. So after the class warmed up learning how to use the easiest of all tools, the Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher on a Dodge Ram Truck they then moved onto this 1958 Impala.

We used the PC and Pinnacle products to remove the holograms and create a true show car finish.

1964 Impala Convertible

This car had lots of rotary buffers swirls in the paint and for this car our class learned how to use the Rupes Bigfoot polishers, pads and products.

1939 Chevy 5-Window Coupe Streetrod

This old streetrod, a 1939 has been neglected for years, maybe decades. The paint truly looked like it was in category #12 of the list of "Paint Condition Categories" in my how-to book.

Category #12 is Past the Point of No Return.

The Flex 3401
We used the Flex 3401 Forced Rotation, Forced Oscillation with Lake Country Hybrid Foam Cutting and Finishing pads with Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover and Advanced Finishing Polish and then sealed the paint by machine using Dodo Juice
Hard Candy Carnauba Wax.

To mechanically decontaminate we used Nanoskin Autoscrub Towels and Wash Mitts with Detailer's Universal Clay Lube as this car felt like rough sandpaper to the touch.

1963 Impala SS
We used this 1963 Impala to teach how to wetsand by machine and how to use rotary buffers.

Dodge Ram Practice Truck
Started out with Charlie's swirled-out Dodge Ram Truck. This truck was painted back in November and then hacked-up with the misuse of a rotary buffer.

The first class of Saturday morning was focused on how to use basic dual action polishers like the Porter Cable 7424XP the Meguiar's G110v2 the Griot's Garage DA Polisher as well as the Cyclo Polisher.

Often time, many of the people in our classes have never used a machine to polish paint. So before I turned them loose on the black 1958 Impala Show Car I broke them in on this truck.

My class also learned how to use the Nanoskin Autoscrub Pads to mechanically decontaminate this truck before starting.

Production Detailing for Daily Drivers
Next up is my buddy Dave's son Josh's truck, a 2004 Dodge Ram 4x4. I'm not sure Josh has washed this truck in a few years and he works at a boat yard as a welder so the truck is parked in an area of heavy industrial pollution.

We machine polished it using Pinnacle XMT 360 which is a light cutting cleaner/wax.

The last class for 2014 was the last weekend in September

Pictures & Comments: Sept 2014 Detail Boot Camp Class (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-saturday-detailing-101/85380-pictures-comments-sept-2014-detail-boot-camp-class.html)

This is a Richard Zocchi car. It is a multiple award winning show car. The paint had light swirls and scratches from years of wiping and dusting but never any professional paint polishing to maintain the show car status.

We used the Porter Cable 7424XP plus Pinnacle compounds and polishes to restore a glistening shine and to introduce most of the class to machine polishing for their first time.

1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible - ALL ORIGINAL including the single stage paint

This car was a real treat. The current owner had recently inherited this car from his father and both the interior and the exterior were in dire need of restoration.

Some nice cars!

Thanks Dave...

Takes a lot of work on the networking and personal relationships side of the business to get these types of cars here for training purposes.

Sure is a lot more fun than working on and learning on rental cars which I've also used in the past.

It's funny it seems like people would jump at the opportunity. Is it the fact that your using them as "training" vehicles scare people away? If I lived closer I would let you teach a class on wetsanding Orange peel on my car. lol
I guess finding those kind of cars might be a little more challenging. I bet some car rental companies lov you!

For some that would be my guess. It's about their comfort level letting anyone "touch" their car. For others I've already earned their trust and then it's a non-issue.

If I lived closer I would let you teach a class on wetsanding Orange peel on my car. lol

Getting rental cars to teach wetsanding isn't a problem, getting a streetrod or muscle car is a bit on the challenging side just due to the time, work and money involved in the part of the owner.

I bet some car rental companies lov you!

Nah... they never even notice the car looks better than when it left.

Have to wonder what the rental car agency thought when pj returend his black Camaro with only one-half of the car buffed out.

This was a first for me...

In my life I've done at least a half a dozen before and after demo cars where I've taped a car down the middle and then only buffed out one side of the car. The deal is after the show or event showcasing the before and after results I always buffed out the other side of the car.

Here's probably the most recognized side-by-side, before and after demonstration.

Well last night... we only buffed out the one side... that means pj is driving around a car with one beautiful bright shiny side and one side is well... take a look....
