I have received a different shop vac which came with a larger diameter hose. I was wondering if anyone knows if I purchase a reducer to neck it down to the smaller size hose (I used to have) will damage the motor on the newer one. Restricting the inlet flow from what it came with. Would be nice to still use my old attachments which still work

From a technical perspective, yes, it will affect the system. Smaller pipe and more fittings will result in a greater head loss. This is more of an issue with water than air.

From a practical standpoint, the greater restriction is at the end where you are pressing a tool against a fabric or carpet, which would result in a far greater strain on the system. So, I say, don't worry, or put the reducer at the tool end, not the tank end
