On Saturday 10/18/2014, five Autogeek members met up to revive an aging black Tacoma…In attendance was me 281 (James), Bryan W (Bryan), Fly07sti (Don), Psnt1ol (Peter), The_Critic (Michael)

The Tacoma belonged to a friend of Don. Upon arrival, it was obvious that the truck had seen some abuse over the years and had the usual mix of swirls, marring and uncorrectable scratches.

When Michael did his extra critical inspection, he repeatedly mentioned these two things to the group: 1) there was noticeable marring leftover from the de-contamination process - which indicates the possibility of soft paint, 2) the majority of the truck had been repainted (confirmed by PTG readings). Knowing this information was important in determining the next steps.

Pre-Wash

After the truck's arrival, we did a quick wash using Optimum No Rinse. Don had already done the de-con before bringing the truck, so were able to start polishing right after the wash and taping.

Once the truck was taped off, Michael did a test spot for the group.

The first combination he tested was HD Adapt with Rupes Yellow Polishing pads on a LHR21ES. While this combination gave a solid 60%+ improvement, the amount of deeper defects leftover would have resulted in a finished product that was not up to Autogeek standard. ;)

The second combination he tested was Meguiars M205 with Meguiars DMF6 Finishing Discs on a LHR21ES using the new Kevin Brown Method. He mentioned that this approach involved loading the discs with a massive amount of M205 in order to use M205 as a "compound." Personally, I thought the idea of using a bottle of "finishing polish" to do any sort of serious correction was crazy talk, but strangely enough, this combination resulted in correction in the 80-90% range and only left a very minor amount of DA haze.

As a team, we decided to use M205 for the correction step after seeing his results. I was personally still skeptical given my past experiences with M205, but I decided to tag along...

Despite using different machines and pads (not everyone owned a Rupes 21 that could use MF discs), everyone still obtained very similar results using M205 for the correction step. After this step, Don, the truck owner's representative, deemed the results to be more than acceptable and gave us approval to go home.

But at this point, Michael appeared and tried to convince Don that the paint needed further refining. He called us hacks and said that we could not coat a truck that had an amount of DA haze that only an elitist detailer could spot. So he did a test spot using HD Polish and convinced Don that we all needed to do more work... :buffing:

So as a team, we performed a final polishing step using HD Polish. We all used different pads and machines, but we obtained the same glossy and haze-free results. After seeing the results, we did sort of agree that the final polishing step took the gloss up a notch or two. :righton:

At this point, we were four hours in, with five people working. This translates to nearly 20 hours of correction work!

Given the significant time investment, we decided to coat this truck with CarPro's CQuartz UK Edition to provide years of excellent protection. Prior to coating, we did two wipedowns using CarPro Eraser.

I gave the front windshield a clean-up using PBL Surface Cleansing Polish and coated it with PBL Diamond Glass Coating.

Given our past experiences with CQuartz UK, we decided to utilize an "assembly line system" for applying this coating. One person applied the product, while another person followed-up behind with a suede towel, and a third person came behind and did a final wipedown with a different suede towel. This process was very efficient and ensured that we did not leave any high spots or streaks.

After the coating, we used Richard Lin's Blackwow Pro to dress all of the black trim pieces. This made an extraordinary difference in the final appearance of the truck.

Lastly, we gave the truck a final wipedown using the new 2014 CarPro Reload. This step gives the coating some extra protection from water spots while it cures plus it gave a noticeable improvement in gloss. In addition, it seems to give the color more depth...

We would like to thank Bryan and his wife for allowing us to host our AG Members Bay Area Meet-N-Greet!
What I personally enjoyed most was hanging out and meeting my fellow hobbyist. One can always learn something new as well as share personal experiences.

I’m an amateur photographer at best and still learning how to use wife’s Nikon D60. With all the excitement going on, I failed to check the camera settings - it was setup for portraits, hence some of the pics are out of focus. I truly commend those that can document their work with pictures…in all honesty, it’s hard to stop and take some pics then continue on…

The owner of the truck was extremely happy and mesmerized with the results! I think the group members were also very happy with the results, and the team environment allowed us to complete the truck in record time and at an unprecedented level of quality – not too shabby for some weekend warriors!

We all had fun and look forward to the next meet/project!

Thanks for looking…until next time!

Thanks everyone. This was my first time working with such a talented crew. I learned a ton and had a blast, and can attest to the validity of the claims made by the photos. The truck looked great!

Now, we did have a few neighbors wondering what was up, but it was mostly people who thought we were having a garage sale. No, Don's 400-towel collection is not for sale.

James is right about the Flex making my HF DA feel...inadequate at best. I'll have to keep my eye out for one of those VIP specials. ;)
