Is there agreement on DAT or SMAT, when encountering Very Hard Clear Coat on a two-step correction with a DA?

Here is the background:

Some of you may have seen this Lamborghini Gallardo in another thread (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/show-n-shine/84368-rent-swirled-out-lamborghini-gallardo-only-1-395-per-day.html)

http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/500/WP_20140805_13_45_39_Pro_1_.jpg

It can be rented by the day ($1,395) or even by the hour. it is abused by the Customers who sometimes take it thru the tunnel wash and the lot porter who has a total of two MF towels

I approached the Owner, quoted him a low number to correct the paint only, no interior, no wheels, etc. The offer was on the condition that he would let me do the Ferrari 458 Italia; which is in much better shape, for the same price. Done deal!

http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/500/WP_20140918_10_22_03_Pro_1_.jpg

I was scheduled to do the Ferrari on Tuesday, so I did a quick test spot to make sure I would have everything I needed. FLEX 3401 Orange CCS/FG400 followed by Wolfgang Finishing Glaze. Looked Fantastic. Nice, workable paint.

I show up bright and early Tuesday and the Ferrari is rented. Manager wants me to do the Lamborghini...no problem. I ask a few questions, he indicates that the hood has been repainted. Test spot on the hood goes fine FG400/Orange, WGFG/Green.

I move onto the area in aft of the front tire using the same combo as the hood.
Inspect with Brinkman...almost not much improvement. Minor marks are slowly decreasing, but swirls and RIDS are standing tall.

I move to the passenger door and start over with another Test Spot:

SI2500/White CCS...nothing

FG400/Orange CCS...some improvement, but cutting too slow, if at all

D300 and 3" DAMF on a PC, speed 6, good pad rotation...not cutting

FG400 and Yellow CCS 4" pad on a PC...cutting a little, visible hazing as expected

- Heavy Downward Pressure
- Machine Speed: tried 4.5 and 6
- Slow to Super Slow Arm Movement
- Up to 12 passes on a 12x12" section

Turns out according to the Owner; the entire car has been re-painted on a couple of occasions, maybe by different body shops!

Not willing to wet/damp sand

I have M105 and M100 in the arsenal. Didn't have them with me bc the test spot was for the Ferrari. Lesson Learned, bring everything!

Art Hernandez may be helping me out next Tuesday, between the two of us, we have lots of different Compounds and Pads. Hoping to avoid the Rotary. Will have a PTG next time as well.

Any advice appreciated

Yep I would be glad to go help out a friend :)

do you have any after shots?

Also, I have used the Flex for a bit so don't have much experience with it. However, it seems odd to me that you weren't able to get the results you were after.

Unless the paint was super rock hard (which for some reason, I find possibly unlikely since it has been repainted) It can be possible though.

I am thinking the pad choice could have played a strong role in this.

Here is the hood of my car (has been repainted too)

Sanded with 1500 then 3000
buffed Lake Country Hybrid Wool Pad
FG400
Polished M205
LC White Polishing Pad

And this one was repainted and sanded with 3000
buffed with Meguiar's MF Cutting Pad
M100
Then polished with M205 and Meguiar's Polishing Pad

all using the Rupes 21

The whole car was sanded btw

So I doubt changing machine would have really made a significant difference in cut. Meaning instead of using the Flex switching to a Rupes. I think it was more pad choice. However, I do remember the Flex with a MF pad being really jumpy. So that might not be a better choice.

So not sure if a Lake Country Hybrid Wool Pad would be a better choice to use with the Flex. I have never used the LC Hybrid wool pad on a Flex, but I can bring them too.

(I have both btw, Meguiar's MF cutting pad and LC Hybrid wool pad :D )

Look what I found!

is this a TufBuf Wool Pad?

Maybe a wool pad might be a better choice?

I can bring them :)

•Re: DAT vs. SMAT...IME:
-Meguiar's terminologies for their product's abrasives.

•Menzerna FG400 uses what has been described as
"Agglomeration Abrasive Technology"---"A.A.T."

•Either: M100, M101, or M105 to the rescue!
Or: Art's Hybrid-Wool/Wool pads & recipes! :dblthumb2:

Thanks Bob, I talked to EvanJ on FB and he said a lambs wool pad a M100 too for the Flex.

So just seems like a minor fix Kyle, I don't have the black lambs wool pads like the TufBuf ones, but I do have the LC hybrid wool pads I can bring.

I ran out of M100, so will be getting some next month, so I've just been using up my other compounds in the meantime lately.

oh and since M100 is SMAT, you can give it a spritz of water to increase the working time too. So that might be another plus Kyle.

So just give me a call and I can go help you out.

Thanks for the input guys

I often hear all Forum Members referring to re-paints as being soft...

Isn't is also possible that the re-painter used a Harder clear than OEM?

The TufBuf pads on Flex are it! Cut great and finish pretty damn nice.

Try loading up a MF Finishing Disc with 205 and using the Kevin Brown method on the LHR21ES?

Try loading up a MF Finishing Disc with 205 and using the Kevin Brown method on the LHR21ES?

Thanks for the suggestion, but based on what I have already tried...M205 ain't gonna "cut it"

Plan is now to try:

M100 & M105 on Purple Foamed Wool with my FLEX and Art's Bigfoot 21

If that doesn't get it...we will try the megs DAMF Cutting

Looking forward to having a second set of eyes on it...thanks Art!

Been dealing with rock hard paint on my white BMW. Carpro flash pads were the only thing that did the job in any reasonable amount of time. I was truly amazed. Using GG6, and only had to use a mid grade polish (Scholl S17+). Have seen threads with guys using FG400 and these pads, but I didn't find it necessary.

This was after trying the following, which did give some improvement, but it was really, really, slow going. Flash pads were the solution.

Uber/orange LC, B&S MF, and Meg's MF pads.
FG400 with the above pads.
Megs 100 with Meg's MF.
Scholl spider with Scholl S3Gold - worked pretty well, but not as fast and easy as flash pad with S17.

I have the 6" and 3"

Thanks Rmd..

Art has so much "gear" now...he forgets what he has!

What is your polisher count up to now, Art?

I wonder what SEMA is going to come out with this year? :coolgleam:

Try them on hard paint Art. Might save you some sanding. Their effectiveness blew me away.
