View Full Version : Grit guard cracking a 5GL bucket?

I've had these buckets for 2 years. I only have a grit guard in the rinse bucket. Today I went to detail the car and the rinse bucket was cracked. It couldn't have been damaged in the garage. It literally sits untouched when I'm not using them.

The bucket has a sort of bulged ring right about where the grit guard sits. Now I should mention that I do not remove the grit guard when I store the bucket.

So is this normal for a grit guard to crack a bucket?

Is it because I didn't ever remove the guard in between washes or is it simply because its a cheap bucket. (I bought it at Walmart)

My 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot, the white food safe ones, the GG is loose enough where it falls out if I turn the bucket upside down.

I think it just depends on the brand. I'm sure the tolerances aren't very strict either.

Ochie....I got my food grade buckets from lowes still holding strong... though when you buy your new buckets try removing the girt guard, and dry to bucket after each use so that way the plastic can expand/contract with the temperatures more freely

There are buckets out there that are more loose than others when the GG is dropped in...

The pep boys buckets are a too tight fit,the Home Depot buckets fit nice and loose and reach the bottom, that's my experiences

Not all buckets are created equal. I have a half a dozen Menards buckets and the guards cause no problems.

I have yellow Megs grit guards, and yellow Megs buckets. Mine are just fine, and like posted above, if I turn my bucket upside down they fall out.

OK thanks for the info. My guard was certainly tight. And it didn't sit at the bottom either. Only went down about 2/3's of the way.

I guess I'll try one of the Home Depot food grade ones.
