Hi Mike,

This morning I was going thru my supplies shaking some stuff up (threw out an old clear round bottle of Meguiar's H-5 New Car Glaze that had turned to solvent and chewing gum and a 10-yo bottle of Poorboy's SSR3 that was growing black stuff in it).

I noticed that some of my Meguiar's products sounded a little watery, particularly the 80, 82, 9, and 26 liquid. Is there something in particular in these products that makes them break down over time (more than some other Meg's products)? These have been stored in pretty benign basement conditions where the temperature is pretty consistent and moderate.

However my real question is I was trying to figure out how old some of this stuff is, and I have a few bottles that are old enough to show Newport Beach as the address rather than Irvine, and I even have an old clear (flat) bottle of #4 that says Mirror Bright Polish Co. Inc., Nashville TN. The price tag on that ($6.65 list, $4.99 retail) would seem to indicate I bought it in 1985.

Do you know when the labeling on the bottles changed from Newport Beach to Irvine?

Think of your polishes like chocolate milk, if not shaken up frequently, the chemicals separate. dont quote me on this but im pretty sure polishes are mostly made of "silicates" abrasives, and a light cleaner?
Anywho, its cool you still had those bottles.. ive only been detailing about 5 years but i love every aspect of it. I would have given you money for them instead of pitchin em lol

The ones I threw out were not usable, unless you like black mold with your SSR3.

I don't... sorry... my guess is sometime in the late 1970's.

They use to say Pasadena, California when the original lab and office was in Pasadena..

These are my #5 bottles....

M05 New Car Glaze
M05 came out in the late 1950's after acrylic lacquer was introduced. The name has caused a lot of confusion over the decades because the name says "New Car" and people with brand new cars no matter what the era think this means it's a product for their car. Fact is, it came out as a product originally specific to single stage paints. It is like M07 except that it dries very fast and turns white when it dries whereas M07 doesn't really dry and remains clearish. M05 is also very powdery as you remove the residue. It is able to give you M07 results but easier to remove in a high-humidity climate due to the drying characteristic.

Here's the back label of the third bottle from the left... back when the new style bottle was CLEAR plastic so you could see that you needed to shake the product. Later they went to solid tan colored plastic bottles.

Notice it states it's made in Irvine and this bottle is likely from the 1970's but possibly the early 1980's.

Thanks Mike, my #5 was like the second from the left, but had separated out into a wad of green chewing gum and solvent/oil. My #4 bottle is like the second from the right, flat and clear, but actually doesn't say Meguiar's anywhere on it, only Mirror Glaze and Mirror Bright.

On the meguiars forum under blast from the past had some info on some of the dates.

Found this in mom and dads garage (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?61718-Found-this-in-mom-and-dads-garage)

Not to much info but it could help.

Thanks for that; that would seem to indicate a relatively small window when bottles would have been labeled Newport Beach, perhaps late 80's to early 90's. Of course that's quite a bit different than what Mike posted above about his flat #5 bottle which says Irvine and he reckons is from late 70's early 80's.

Someone in that thread does mention barcodes...I'm going to have to look at my bottles again....ok, did that...that helped me correct my memory on something.

Sorry, my bottle of H-5 went out with the trash today. The rest I am trying to decide what to do with--they really aren't vintage like the pictures Mike posted. I've got the one clear flat bottle of #4 that says Mirror Bright Polish Company, then a bottle of #2 and #26 that say Newport Beach, I probably bought them in the late 80's...possibly the #4 and 5 were from the early 80's. The rest is no older than 10 years. Well actually I probably have a couple of other things that might be from the 90's.
