Hi fellow geeks I have a question a buddie of mine asked me to take a look at his hood.

First approaching it it looked like clear coat failure. But then I rub it with my finger and it seemed to have taken it off.

Could it be just the oils hiding everything or is it just embedded dirt? I did a little test spot with a clay mitt and it did nothing really here are some pictures

Hard to say without being there.... it could be surface oxidation....

It could be beginning clearcoat failure

Here is the best example I've been able to find that shows beginning clear coat failure,

Here's what you can try...

Try using a fine cut polish or a cleaner/wax or a paint cleaner and just buff a dedicated, small section of affected paint. Apply some wax over this section or paint sealant after you've polished it.

Then watch it for a week or two and see if the results last or if the appearance returns to how it looked before you started. That will tell you if you can save the paint or not.

Question...

What has your buddy done in the past to maintain the paint?

Hi Mike thank you I'm gonna try what you said. Gonna be as gentle as possible. He doesn't really use it much it sits in the garage. Just washes and waxes it. It came from Arizona

It came from Arizona

Ouch....

If the car sat outside for any length of time, especially if not regularly maintained, then chance could be it's beginning clearcoat failure.
