View Full Version : Still a musky smell from air vents

Hello All,

I've been doing cigarette smoke removals with zero issues in the past and received at least 80% improvement from each detail.. However;

I have a car I just can't get the musky smell to go away, and it ONLY occurs when the air is first turned on. After about 5 seconds of blowing a somewhat of a foul odor, everything is just fine. I steamed, I changed cabin air filter, and used Dakota Bomb as well as the new Meguiar's Air Re-freshener ( break in tab and run the air on high, recirculate for 15mins).

Any other suggestions?

Again, it is only after you start the AC system and lasts only 5 seconds.

Thanks!

If it was my car I would remove the air filter. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean it and spray it with a Dakota air bomb.

Re fit and them switch on air con to recycle and spay a decent amount of air bomb in the car

Close the doors and windows and let it run for 5 mins and hopefully that should work.

If not, I am not sure

You need this: 1Z Einszett Klima-Cleaner Air Conditioner Treatment (http://www.autogeek.net/1z-einszett-klima-cleaner-air-freshener.html)

You can also go to an HVAC supply store and get a can of evaporator cleaner. Just make sure it's a no-rinse type.

PS That's probably a musty smell, if it's musky you've got a different problem!

Musty!!** thanks for the correction.

I will look into the products mentioned above.

I had only temporary luck with Dakota Bomb on this car. Every other car worked well.

Thanks All!

I would turn on the A/C and spray Lysol into the inlet vent in the windshield wiper cowling.

Are you running the A/C when you Bomb?

Sorry, just saw in OP that you are

I will look into the products mentioned above.

That south American river place has Nu-Calgon Evap Foam No Rinse which seems to be a similar product, but it doesn't come with the tube to snake down the vent like the 1Z. I can vouch for the 1Z, it works great for this kind of thing.

Did I miss something? But have you checked for a "cabin air filter?"

Yeah, you missed it in the first post:

Sounds like maybe the blend door has some remnants stuck in it? Not that you want to sit in the car and switch modes but maybe you need to cycle it through the settings. Perhaps there is a foam seal or something that is contaminated.

got exactly the same issue with my own Rav4. I've replaced the cabin filter, tried the bomb as well as a couple of others and a fogging machine. nothing seems to work. and its just those first couple of minutes, once its run for a little while the smell goes away again but its there every time i switch the ac on. would love to know if you find something that works
