I see in some reviews how so many people use these meters to measure paint thickness and it's obvious why. It makes perfect sense.

My question is this.

1) what is the "um" reading?
2) Is paint thickness measure in um or mils?
3) Is it really that necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on a paint meter?
4) I've seen prices range from 45 bucks to 1400 bucks, Is the difference that big?

Thanks in advance.

1. Microns, or micrometers...a millionth of a meter
2. Either
3. No, it gives you more information, but it isn't the be-all, end-all
4. Yes, a $45 probably isn't very good. But you don't need a $1400 one.

I've used the CM8801NF from your favorite online auction source and it has been great to me. Would I love to get one that can do plastics, carbon fiber, and fiber glass? Absolutely but for the time being ill stick with the one I have. It has saved me on a few occasions.
