The Hernandez Polisher

Here is what I did and used everyone. (Also, if you do decide to make one of these it will be at your own risk)

1.) I got the threaded rod and made sure it was 5/16-24 and used a hack saw to cut it down to size. (You'll have to figure out the length of the bar, just use a black sharpie to mark it)
2.) I got couplers with the same threading and a washer.
3.) Used the wrench that comes with the machine and used a pair of pliers
a.) I tightened the bolt by hand
b.) screwed in the couplers
c.) used the wrench the comes with the machine to tighten it up (somewhat lightly)
d.)Tightened all the couplers using both wrench and pliers
4.) I used the wrench to hold down the already tightened extension and screwed in the bp like normal.

I used an Xacto knife to cut the backing plate and ordered the 2" pads from BuffDaddy

If you don't have one of these or an air supply/compressor.

but have one of these

Then you can make one of these

Hi Art...

Thanks for sharing: The Hernandez Polisher!!
Pretty neat DIY...:props:

Question:
How does this Hernandez polisher's throw (orbit; eccentric offset)...which I'll assume is 3/16" (5mm)...
translate/transfer to the interface between the pad and the panel being buffed?

For example:
-Seems like since the pad is now at a longer distance from the bevel gear drive...is there the same smooth operation as before the modification?
-Any noticeable loss of "buffing power"?
-Shimmy/wobble
-Etc.

Thanks in advance for any input you are able to provide.

Necessity is the mother of invention!! :dblthumb2:

I've added a threaded extension on my Flex PE-14 which allows me to "reach" those hard to get spots....:props:

Art, you're always thinking my friend.....

Bob

There might have been loss of "buffing power" if I kept the 3" bp, however with it cut down an extra inch. It has plenty of power. Maybe to much if not careful, because it does heat up rather quickly. I've only tried it with Meguiar's polishing pad and Meguiar's AIO D151 and did a great job, but have a good number of pads and compounds/polishes to keep testing it.

I do want to test out and go to the point of no return (burn the paint) with it to see what force, speed, combo, etc... can cause this. I just don't have a test panel to try it out on. I am going to try to sneak it to Meguiar's TNOG next Thursday (since it is considered contraband there lol)

As far as shimmy/wobble I didn't feel there was any really since with the thread rod screwed in and couplers screwed in and tightened. It seems that it has plenty of support, but further testing needs to be done to determine this.

Also the Griots GG3 does have a lifetime warranty so if anything does go wrong I imagine I could just put it back to it's OEM state and send it back for repair. Nothing was changed as for as motor or inside the housing. I just changed bp's and made an extension. So hopefully it is covered.

If you don't want to "sneak it in" to TNOG...aren't the threads the same on a Meguiar's DA?

We could use that for burning some paint.

I think they are. The only thing is their machines seem a lot more powerful for this type of modification. I'll still bring everything though... :xyxthumbs:

Check it out everyone! Kevin Brown posted this on FB. I wish I would have had these pictures to follow when I was making mine. He was a great help though.

I would really like for someone to do some thorough testing too with the extension. :hungry:

Here is a little feedback. (I am not naming any names because I did not get the green light to do so btw)

If not I would gladly say, "guess what guys company so and so is coming out with brand new products!"

So after making a couple of calls. (Funny thing is they knew who I was lol) :dblthumb2:

A birdie told me that we might be seeing 2" pads in around 2 weeks and I think Autogeek is going to be having them in stock.

Seems like there will be a 2" bp and 2" pads coming...

Anybody have any ideas on how to cut these down? Those were cut with scissors btw and I tried using an xacto knife and a drill punch, but the scissors worked the best and still did a inaccurate job.

The cutting the foam is beyond my brain capacity!! I am still trying to know the extension mod that is why I PM'd you!!!.....LOL BTW, it works for the PC 7424 XP too. Same threads and nuts and bolts. Thank you for showing me this!! I am looking into the B&S Backing Plate with the 3 inch chuck.Part # BUF-300Y. I will adapt this to the XP. Again, Art thank you for your help! Sorry I can't help you with the Pads.

Hey Art
Make a hole punch.........2 inch piece of pipe(like exhaust tubing) about 8 inches long, use a dremel tool and sharpen one end. Lay your pad down on a piece of wood.....(cover the wood with paper or something not to contaminate the pad) and then hit with a big hammer! BAMM! instant hole punch.
