Car is a 1980 Porsche 928 in for complete exterior restoration. The back bumper:

I showed the pictures to Steve at Poorboys when I was down there this weekend. He agreed they looked like faded rubber and should en cleaned with apc and then hit with a couple of coats of trim restorer. So I washed them with apc and a soft brush and so far have used three coats of trim restore. The fading around the edges is mostly gone and it appears shiny again but scratched.

He best info I can find about these bumpers is that they are "body colored polyurethane." Just tying to make sure I'm going down the proper route in bringing these things back.

Btw, the rest of the car is a bear, full write up coming probably Sunday evening.

Thanks all!

i think at some point they did match the color of the car, but it looks like clear and paint are done for. only a respray is going to fix that.

If that portion of the body is urethane then the fading is normal and you'll see this fading and changing of color on a lot of C4 Corvettes.

My guess has always been that for the urethane parts on cars they either use a different paint or add more Flex Agent to the paint being sprayed due to urethane parts being flexible.

Just a guess....

That or it's a bad repaint.

Also happens to many C3 Corvettes.

Here's a couple of photos of a 1973 roadster that I'm working on that has a faded (poly)urethane nose clip cover in dire need of replacement:

My one and only Porsche love. Not impressed with the rest of the fleet but there is SOMETHING about the 928 that just has my eye!

I once raced a 928 with my then brand spankin new 1986 Pontiac TA HO.

The Porsche was smoking like a pig, like it was a diesel, and sounded like it was running on 6 cylinders.
Yep, you guessed it, he tore me a new one.

Not that I thought his car was particularly fast, it was that mine, and all other of those mid 80's GM sports cars were true bow wows. Race results would've been a lot different had it been my '67 Vette, or my '68 SS396 Camaro.

Even my cousin's brand new black 1986 Vette was a dog.

Wow thanks for the insight guys, very much helpful and appreciated.

I used the trim restorer on the bumper and it looks a lot better than what you see in those pics. I guess the customer will have to keep up applications of that, or else have the bumper repainted. I plan on giving him a list of recommended products for upkeep anyway.
