View Full Version : Rust on Gagage Floor

A couple of years back, we had a conversation about removing rust marks from garage floors. Someone mentioned using "X"...that's the problem I don't remember what was mentioned, nor can I find the original thread.

I just remember that the product recommended was something one would NOT ever consider.

Anyone remember or have a good suggestion on getting rust marks (like from where the snow shovel(s) sit during the winter) off or out of the floor.

Thanx in advance!

Bill

Doesn't muriatic acid work for that? Good Housekeeping says white vinegar or products containing oxalic acid.

Home Depot has a Behr Concrete and Masonry Cleaner and Etcher that has phosphoric acid in it and says removes rust stains.

I've always had great luck with bleach to neutralize rust stains on concrete.

I would try some CLR.

I've had good success with using vinegar to remove rust from the inside of motorcycle tanks and off of some old chromed parts during a restoration as well. The problem with vinegar in this case is it's a relatively weak acid so it takes time to work.

Maybe try naval jelly. Phosphoric acid (what makes Coke good at cleaning up battery acid) is the main ingredient. Only much higher content than Coke.

I haven't tried naval jelly on concrete, but it works like you wouldn't believe on metal!

Thanx for all the replies Guys.

I am familiar with using an acid based cleaner (done it more than once).

The thread I was thinking about; the poster said he used something like Dow Bathroom Cleaner ("Scrubby Bubbles"). I was just trying to find it again for my brother-in-law. He refuses to even consider any sort of acid (he's one of those people who knows it all and, well you get the idea), so I was looking for a substitute for him. Of course, if he'd just hang up his snow encrusted tools the rust problem becomes much less of a problem.

I like the idea of CLR...might try that one myself next Spring (I'm pretty 'rust-free' for this year).

Again, thanx for all the replies!

Happy Father's Day!
