1992 Ford Sho paint type? Single stage or clear?

Hey all,

Next week I am going to be doing a full detail on my grandfathers beloved 1992 Ford Sho (bright red). He wants to get back to taking it to Sho meets and car shows. I have been given the honor of fixing it up.

Now my question is for anybody who owns or has worked on a car of this vintage, what type of paint is it? I want to say it is a basecoat/clearcoat, but I am not 100% sure. I do not have it with me right now to do a paint transfer test. I know some cars that age still came with single stage paints, so I want to verify what I am going to be dealing with.

I have a good amount of experience with base/clear paint work, but have never done a single stage. If it is a single stage, does it still work with the same procedures and products? Any links or info would rock!

It has been garage kept its whole life, so it is in very good condition. It will look amazing when I am done with it. Pictures will be posted to show and shine when finished! :dblthumb2:

I have cut, buffed and polished several single stage paints and i use the same methods, products, machines etc. as if it is a 2 stage clearcoated vehicle. If in fact it is a single stage paint the only difference is you'll see the color on your pads.

If its the Red Crimson noted above it looks like its clearcoated.

Finally got around to doing this July 4th weekend. The car is looking very sharp, and my grandfather is one happy man. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

For future search reference, this color was a clear coated paint as mentioned earlier.

I've never done any detailing on those cars - but I was wrenching on these cars at Ford when they came out. Those engines were built by Yamaha and they are pretty awesome. The only problem we ever had with them was the Ford catalytic converters would break up and the catalyst material would get into the cylinder bore via the exhaust valves - and score the bore. But, other than that rare occurrence - those engines were pretty stout. Not like that info helps you.

My guess is all the SHOs are clear coated - as I believe most Taurus' of that vintage were (except maybe white?)
