Thanks for putting them altogether in one thread.

That's quite a list!!

And a lot of work behind the list. Not just taking on the responsibility to get the job done but to do it without making any mistakes. Considering that the majority of the guys that you'll see in the pictures for each one of these projects had never machine buffed before or even worked on cars of this caliber... well that's quite a list.

That's my fault. I gravitate towards cool cars versus transportation cars. It's just in my blood. The body lines of cool cars endures the test of time.

When I watch all the "Car Guy TV Shows" the majority of these TV shows are about working on cool cars and trucks. I remember once watching Bryan Fuller and Kevin Byrd on "Two Guys Garage" and their project car was a Toyota Prius. Nothing wrong with a Toyota Prius in fact in their own right they are a very cool car but watching Bryan and Kevin try to hotrod and even improve the engineering of this car over what Toyota has already accomplished was kind of funny to watch.

One of the things I enjoy doing in my job here at Autogeek is to bring in all these cool cars and then invite our local forum members and non-forum members to be a part of the team that does the transformation work and to me, this is one of the things that separates this forum from all the rest.

You can watch TV and watch other guys work on these types of cars but if you live around here you actually get to work on the kinds of cars you see on shows like Overhaulin, Chasing Classic Cars, Fast & Loud, Counting Cars, etc.

Makes making a list like you see above very rewarding.

It's definitely a great thing living close to AG and having the opportunity to work on such cool cars with other forum members and get hands-on experience, at the same time working along side Mike Phillips, one of the best in the business. :dblthumb2:

1957 Chevy Extreme Makeover - Pictures & Videos (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-autogeek-s-car-week/57514-1957-chevy-extreme-makeover-pictures-video.html)

Here's a close-up of the sanding scratches remaining in the paint after this car was painted and portions were sanded and buffed.

Doing a Test Spot = Dialing-in a successful process
Before we started, I did some Test Spots in an attempt to dial-in a process that would remove the defects while using the least aggressive approach to leave as much paint on the car as possible while creating a show car finish.

In this shot I buffed the paint only using dual action polishers like the Griot's Garage DA Polisher followed by the Flex 3401.

While these two tools dramatically improved the finish in the end we broke out the Flex PE 14 Rotary Polishers and tackled the hood with wool cutting pads as that's what was needed to remove these sanding marks.

My comment...
While single stage paints generally speaking tend to be softer than modern clear coat paints due to the affect the pigment has on the resin, in this case, from experience I found this single stage paint to be very hard and my friends and professional detailers Robert, Jeff and Paul all agreed with may assessment.

Risky Buffing
This hardness factor combined with the thin paint factor makes buffing out a paint job like this a tad bit on the risky side so it's important to always be focused on the task at hand to avoid making any mistakes. By this I mean watch the paint as you're buffing and stop and check your progress often.

Never Assume Paint Hardness or Softness
So remember, anytime you're working on a car that you've never worked on before, don't assume anything about the paint's hardness or softness until you've done some testing doing what I call and teach in all my classes, doing a Test Spot.

From my article list (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/23722-articles-mike-phillips.html)...

How To Do a Test Spot (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/how-articles/50162-how-do-test-spot.html)

The car still looks great to this day.Needs a light polish and maybe a sealant but still turns heads. You can see how trashed the paint was and embarrassing. Now only Pinnacle water-less wash and microfiber towels.(Robert Diterlizzi method.)Paint is`nt perfect but far far better since the makeover.Once you learn and continue to learn from the best of the best there`s no turning back.Since joining AGO I can`t look at any car`s paint the same way. Amassing transformations go on in the autogeek garage with our Team Leader Mike Phillips.:buffing:

Hi John,

I added the Meguiar's Big Rig project to the list, it's at the bottom. I put the list together pretty quickly, I'll guess I missed one or two other Thursday night write-up threads.

If anyone has time and wants to go through the multiple pages of threads in the below forum and cross-check them to my list and then let me know which threads I'm missing that would be cool.

Pictures: 1928 Model A - Wetsand, Cut and Buff at Autogeek (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-autogeek-s-car-week/71329-pictures-1928-model-wetsand-cut-buff-autogeek.html)

This was a very unique project in that wet sanding cars from the 1920's and 1930's is very tricky. They are a lot harder to wet sand, cut and buff than cars built after the 1940's.

I've also never seen any other detailing discussion forum offer this kind of opportunity for their members. That is inviting people to wet sand, cut and buff a 1928 Model A Hotrod!

On the left is John and on the right is Patryk (http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/2055/Detailing_Classes_September_017.jpg) and they are doing some machine wetsanding between the ribs on the filled roof. Patryk attended my detailing boot camp class (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-saturday-detailing-101/70875-pictures-detailing-boot-camp-class-september-28th-29th-2013-a.html) the previous weekend and has a strong background in Marine Detailing. Now he's taking up car detailing with a focus on Special Interest Vehicles.

Here's Matt and Craig learning to machine wetsand for their first time on a 1928 Model A Hotrod...

Notice how well taped-off this hotrod is? That's because it has a lot of curves and edges and paint is thinnest in these areas. The tape not only protects these areas but it's a visual reminder to avoid sanding on these areas.

Machine Wetsanding
After hand sanding the passenger side of the engine cowel next Robert machine wetsand using a Porter Cable and 6" Trizact #1500 Sanding Disc. I trust Robert with any sanding and buffing project we have here at Autogeek as he has years of experience and is incredibly talented when it comes to the art of polishing paint.

Frank's First Time
Here's Frank learning all about how to wetsand, cut and buff fresh paint here at Autogeek's Show Car Garage!

This was Frank's first visit to our Thursday night gigs and he picked an great night to join us as not only did he get to see the entire process from sanding, cutting, polishing and machine waxing a very cool traditional hot rod but he also was able to helps us restore the original paint on a 1956 Chevy Bel Air (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/70398-1956-chevrolet-bel-air-original-paint.html).

Den wetsanding the curve of the roof...
It's always great to have Den here to help with these projects. Sometime in the near future we're going to have Den's GTO here for a show car makeover.

Big Boys Toys
After getting the feel for how to machine sand using the 3" Peanut Polishers, I let the guys move up to the big boys toys meaning move up to the 6" 3M Trizact Discs on full size dual action polishers. Below Den is using the Meguiar's G110v2 as a machine dampsander.

Machine Waxing
Here's Niki machine waxing the passenger side fender using the new Dodo Juice Supernatural Wax. For the most part, we do everything by machine when we can and it's the best fit for the project. Niki (http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/2055/Detailing_Classes_September_002.jpg) also attended the detailing boot camp class (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/pictures-saturday-detailing-101/70875-pictures-detailing-boot-camp-class-september-28th-29th-2013-a.html) that took place the previous weekend.

Mike,

This is an impressive list. I'm fairly new to all of this and seeing these cars and then being able to read and watch the tutorials--not to mention your books--- has been both helpful and inspiring...

Ever thought of taking all these write-ups and photos and turn them into a "coffee table" type book/e-book? Sure would be fun to sift through...

Thanks for the kind words... it's a lot of fun to tackle these types of projects and even better to turn them into a tutorial for others to follow at the same time.

Plus, since the pictures are NOT hosted on Photobucket these threads and their pictures will endure over time. That's not going to happen for all the guys that continue to use Photobucket to host their pictures. Sooner or later they pictures will disappear.

I like that idea.... if management likes it then it's a good possability....

Plus we keep churning them out so there's more to come in the future... including boats.
