There's chrome plated plastic trim around my headlight that is all swirled and has some light scratches.

I have ScratchX 1.0, which is supposed to be a light abrasive.
I used a MF towel and applied it lightly, rubbing and rubbing.
All it did was put a million more fine scratches into the chrome. Fk me.
To make sure it was not the MF towel's fault, I rubbed the chrome hard with no polish, and there were no scratches created.

It seems impossible to remove any scratches from chrome.

What product will actually remove chrome swirls rather than cover them up?

Have you tried a product like Meguiar's Ultimate Polish? I'm thinking that may help since it's SMAT based where as ScratchX 1.0 is DAT (I believe). If not something like plastx may also help since it's meant for plastic.

Plastic coated chrome you have to be careful with cause if not you will end up removing the chrome coating with that said you could try a meguiars ultimate compound or ultimate polish thought this material you really cant correct therefore I suggest you just replace it
