Hi All,

First I have to say I love this forum! I'm just a weekend warrior who's getting back into detailing my own vehicles and I've learned a lot here. I love to look at many of your beautiful details. So now to my question: I will be moving out west in a few months. Where I am moving, it's mostly desert with frequent sand storms and it tends to play hell on windshields. The rental car I had only had 4k miles and the windshield had what looked like bug guts all over it. Except it wasn't bugs, it was rock chips. Everywhere. So what can I do to add some protection to my vehicles windshield. Obviously I won't be able to protect it from everything, but I would like to do what I can. Thanks!

:welcome: To Autogeek Online!! :props:

What I apply to all my vehicles is Aquapel Glass Treatment (http://www.autogeek.net/rain-repellent.html)

Welcome to autogeek ...as for your question you will most likely looking for a glass coating such as CarPro FlyBy30 Windshield & Glass Coating Kit

To be honest, I've tried using various waxes/sealants/coatings on my windshield including but not limited to:
Klasse AIO/HGSG
Collinite 845
DP paint coating
Carpro Flyby 30
Wolfgang DGPS

And I've come to the conclusion that a well clayed, thoroughly deep cleaned, polished with just a regular foam polish pad and a finishing polish windshield will bead/sheet water better than anything you can put on it.

I usually just use D156 during my maintenance wash on my personal cars.

Welcome to AGO!

I have no reason to switch from Aquapel.

Unless I receive free Opti-Glass. :)

I have Opti-Glass Coating on my windshield and all other glass including panoramic roof and so far I'm very satisfied with it (applied more than 3 months ago)..
Great beading and sheeting, easy to clean and no need to use wipers when you drive in heavy rain.
Claimed to improve resistance against scratching and rock chips but I think this is subjective (size, sharpness, angle & speed of the little rock that hits your windshield).
It's expensive but should cover at least 4 cars (full glass coating) or 20 windshields only.

I bought a sealant from pinnacle. It's ok. Has to be bone dry when wipe off or just smears. Regular wax seams to work just as good

I find the DP Poli-Coat works very well on glass, before that I used Griots Paint Sealant, last a few months if I don't use the wipers much.

Detailer’s Glass Coating, glass sealant, rain repellent (http://www.autogeek.net/auto-glass-coating.html)

:xyxthumbs: Great product. I have it on all exterior glass. 1 year of protection is not far off at all. I applied it last fall, and it took on winter without missing a beat. I reapplied this spring. Dont let the price scare you. A bottle will last many applications.

Original post said rock chips.

OPTI-GLASS is the only product I've ever seen advertised to provide some chip/scratch resistance. This is a major difference to rain repellent only type of products that improve visibility in wet conditions.

Whether or not it will provide the 'protection' you need is the question.
HOWEVER, anything (IMO as along as it is designed for winshield - your testing should validate) is better than nothing in terms of providing some scratch resistance. Just the act of dry wiping with the wiper can impart scratches.

I put cquartz UK on my windshield, all windows actually. its great on all the glass, the only complaint is there is slight chatter on the windshield. i barely have to use them, to avoid the chatter, i do use d156 on the windshield. i actually have a bottle of g1, but didnt get to use it
