My Parents picked up a 2014 Subaru Forester in Dark Charcoal Metallic. I won't get in to how bad the paint was(It was owned by a guy who either washed it with sandpaper or was addicted to dry washing LOL). Anyway, I was out of the usual painters tape that I normally use(3m I think, always leaves a little tell tale it was there). I picked up some Scotch, blue painters tape. Everywhere I put it after removing it, left a stain/tell tale sign it was there. I've tried IPA, 3m general purpose adhesive cleaner and peanut butter. Peanut butter seemed the most effective. The bottom of the door trim was the worst. I used peanut butter on the entire trim pieces. I REALLY don't want to get in to doing that each time I detail a car. It's annoying because the rest of the car is glowing and I can still see these marks. What would you recommend for masking tape? I bought three rolls of this. Two of the one inch and one of two inch. They're going back. No way I am using that again. Feedback would be appreciated!!

Here is a quick shot of the car. Menzerna SIP/Flex then Wolfgang Finishing Glaze 3.0 on the cyclo with blue pads. Fuzion sealed it all up.

Been there, done that. Outside, overcast warm day. Dark colored vehicle. What a PITA!

Vegas, I used a little blue tape on the bottom vinyl piece beneath my doors on my civic. There is still a line there. LOL, do I have bad luck? Maybe rubbing off the compound would be easier than taping?

I hate the stuff! The last two rolls I gave away to my work boss, as I don't even want to use it around the house. Overpriced garbage is what it is.

larry kosilla has a great tip. Rub the tape across your leg once or twice and there should be less of an adhesive on the tape

I just found this pic on my phone...it shows a clearer pic of what I was up against. I hate that tape line, so apparent. Obviously, I went over the line with Menzerna, and that was taken care of.

Or grab some FrogTape from a local retailer, that stuff is great--the yellow FrogTape is the one for delicate surfaces.

Agreed on the tape. I have tried taping my cars, friends cars and I finally just use the Old-fashion-let-me-be-very-careful-method when I polish and so far.....so good......I was getting tired of spending the time to remove the glue from the tape or tape lines or whatever the tape left. Now about being lucky....I hope it's still there!

Do you think it is better than the 3M green tapes (233+) ?

Looks like the thinnest Frog Tape is almost 1 1/2". Is that too wide? The 3M is 7/10ths of an inch (18mm).

Interested b/c it is about the same price

Frog Tape
(180 foot roll)
$6.97 at Home Depot

$.039 per foot

3M 233+ (http://www.autogeek.net/3m-scotch-tape-18.html)
(105 foot roll)
$3.75 each (buy 4)

.036 cents per foot

I just bought the 1 inch (slightly less than 1") FrogTape from Sherwin-Williams last week (I've seen in Lowes as well). Not sure if it's any better as I haven't tried the 3M tape before but I would wager it's just as good.

I think the 1" Green Frog Tape is different than the Yellow Frog Tape which is labeled "Delicate Surface"

Interested to hear how each of them perform...especially anyone who washes the vehicle between the compounding and polishing steps and leaves the tape on.

I have not tried this technique, but it would save a lot of time.

We have a beach house not too far away that was badly damaged by Irene. It's finally moved and rebuilt. I didn't even realize it, but the tape I used to mask off a lot of parts of the walls and ceiling was 233. I went there today and grabbed the rolls and brought them home.

I am with the above Author that said he doesn't care for taping. I've detailed a lot of cars in my day(I'm 43) and I never used tape until recently. It is a royal pita..and has it's drawbacks(trying to do good, you add one more annoyance, residue from trying to do good). We'll see how the 233 does. My friend has a Z06 like mine. It's black. LOL, he became so annoyed with taping(it does suck!) that He is simply cautious and avoids taping.
