Jumper cables...

Two questions... Going to buy Sears Craftsman 4 gauge jumper cables for my Lexus ES350. Anyone have any knowledge regarding this
brand and gauge.

Second, several years ago an employee in my condo garage
jumped my dead car battery and my battery exploded. Why?

I used to think you could do it by hooking up the cables incorrectly, but it was explained to me that an older battery can leak hydrogen and the spark from the jumper cable could ignite it.

From my understanding this is very, very rare

An agressive charge can create gassing and if a spark in a cell happens BAM. If gasses ignighted outside of the battery I'd blame the connection on the terminal and wonder if the person properly connected the negative. I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

Never used those specific cables.

I've never used them but I'd dare say that craftsman is a pretty good brand. And 4 gauge will be plenty big for your vehicle.

Check and see if there's any mention of their flexibility in cold weather?

Some cheapos get as hard as steel rebar when the temps plummet at, or below zero, and that's often when one needs the jumpers cables the most.

I have some of those 4 gauge cables...they weigh about 50 lbs. They are sitting in my basement...who carries jumper cables anymore?

Been using the same jumper cables I bought at Thrift Drug for $8 in 1997 - they work fine. Don't over think this.
