With the discontinuation of the Brinkman light it seems that the preferred tool for inspecting paint is no longer an option. I've seen some discussion of the halogen / LED work lights being used, but has anyone tried photography lighting setups similar to these:

You would be much better with a single LED flashlight than with one of the multi LED panel lights that you linked to. They will provide a nice diffuse light source. Not exactly what you want to pin point a swirl, marr, or hologram.

Even an inexpensive one LED flashlight will do a decent job for you, as long as it has a clear lens. Not a frosted or marbled/dimpled lens. They used to have a great deal on a two pack of LED flashlights at Costco. So I am sure that other similar stores will have the same.
Just make sure to get one that uses "C" cells to power it. Those batteries last forever, are cheap to replace, and can get them anywhere.
