Can you use painter's tape on the paint surface or is there a special automotive tape to tape off a test spot?

There is specific tape for automotive use its not as sticky but if you only have painters tape its alright to use just stick it to your pants once or twice, and its good to go

They have a low tack painters tape at Lowe's I buy. Can get different widths. Green color

Or you can stick the tape to your pants first and lower the stickyness some what

I've had bad luck with painters tape and having to clean residue off of moldings. I find that any heavy corrections cause the tape to heat up and semi-bond to trim and moldings if your not careful about keeping your pads off the tape. Friend of mine owns a body shop and supplies me with tape he uses in his spray booth that resists heat welding but I'm not sure which brand it is. I'll find out and report back. :-)

I always use the Green 3M 233+ painters tape. Provides exceptional bond strength and pulls away cleanly.

I really like this as well. Trying to find a store that has this locally. Real annoying always having to order it. But, is worth it IMO.

I've been using the 3m blue painters tape, the only problem I ever had with it was it left a little tape mark on my primer when I painted the car but that came right out with a little of solvent, any other time I have applied it right to the clear coat it come's right off, I have also used it to protect the front of the car on the way to a show after freshly painting it and it left no mark and held up really well here's a pic
