So of course I am one of the first, so I think, guys to get this gauge and what do you know, slow shipping and when I get the gauge, nothing works properly.

First reading...off, okay, no problem. Zero the gauge, next reading, zero, obviously. Reading spot again, 13 microns, okay. One more time, 783 microns. Again, 1000 microns. Again, "over". Again, NOT THE RIGHT MEASUREMENT.

Even the shims @ 99 microns for example read 63, 790, 1200, 13, 0 or "over" microns.

Am I calibrating it wrong?

Brand new batteries and totally clean shims.

Reads on paint at like 12 microns or 0, always. Or if it doesn't it's at 400 and some.

Update:

48um shim always shows ~750um
257um shim always shows ~400um
99um shim always shows ~300
48um shime always shows ~85um

But...it will always zero out on a regular bare shim now.

In my previous post the last 48um should be 497um.

Update again though, I just did my hood which is aluminum, only aluminum part on my car and this is what I got.

Yes the car has been repainted.

45 readings in 15 spots.

Is this normal?

Seems it won't calibrate for Fe material.

My 99um shim shows on average 640um. So I went around the GFs whole car and it gave me an average of 656um which I am confident in detailing on.

But no matter how many times I set 640um to the real 99um, it never catches on.

Did I get a lemon that only works on NFe substrates?

sounds weird, have you contacted the seller. I have not seen many or any threads on this model. keep us posted though

Problem is the seller speaks such broken English they don't understand it doesn't work. Ha.

I wish there was a way to reset this thing. I feel that what it needs.

That's not a terribly bad idea, I may just use it.

Thanks.

Have you actually calibrated it?

Zeroing it is NOT the same as calibrating it. There should be calibration instructions included with your device (there are with the CM8801FN at least).

I keep trying to do so but it doesn't seem to work out.

No matter how many times I would change the gauge from 640um is the correct 99um it always ready 640um.

In fact sometimes it actually keeps reading higher and higher after ever calibration. After every reset to 99um once it just kept reading 100um more at a time until I got "over".

I wonder if the calibration instructions are different for the CM8801FN.
