View Full Version : Sticky wheels weight residue
I know someone that works in a muffler and brake shop and they always use brake cleaner to clean the sticky weight residue. So I was always wondering is it safe to use on the wheels finish without causing any damage?

I don't think I'd go that harsh.
I'd start with a bug/tar remover or something like Goo Gone. Goo Gone has always worked for me on even some of the nastiest adhesive residue.

when I remove that type of glue off my wheels I used bug and tar remover with an cotton rag(that way the glue stick to the rag/ i could throw it out if I wanted) then I was left with a black semi sticky stain so I placed meguiars M105 and followed it with M205 and it was good as new

Agreed with Goo Gone suggested.
You can find it anywhere (Target, Walgreens, etc). And cheap. An 8oz bottle should last you years.

I like to mix a bit of Goo Gone with water and use in a spray bottle. Works well for lower panels/valences with road tar and removing adhesive.

Since I have gallons of it I use Naptha.
Pour some onto a rag and let it sit on the old wheel tape and a few minutes later the crud just wipes off. And a gallon of it should last most of you for years.

I can vouch for the 3M adhesive remover. Much faster than goo-gone.
Probably more toxic too...

I usually just use a plastic scraper and steam but if they are stubborn I use 3m Adhesive Remover and it does the trick!
The brake fluid cleaner was removing the sticky weight residue in seconds so I wasn't sure how safe it is for the wheels. For my cars I think am going to try the 3m adhesive remover.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
