Hey guys, I got off work today an decided to take a ride down the Autobahn. Thought i would share. It was a decent day with temps around 35 degrees at 16:00.

The Autobahn is like the highways we have in the U.S. Only here there are no speed limits in un populated areas. When you go through a town or city there will be speed limits. Most of the time in a speed limit area it is 80 mph. In my pictures it is unlimited.

Sorry for the blurry first picture. Didn't give the iPhone enough time to focus.

Pretty cool Mike! What the fastest you've gone? I can't wait till you create a video on the Nurburgring!

I want to go on the Autobahn at some point in my life, but i must have a decent car.

The fastest i ever went was 143mph in the Genesis on a mile run, but it's limited to 155.

My coworker goes to Germany all the time. He got a ticket on the Autobahn on one of his last trips.
LOL- I kid you not... he got a letter from Germany in the mail delivered here.

Thanks James!

I have hit 155 as that is where the limiter is set. I only do that when I have summer tires on though. Doing anything over 100 with winter tires is a bit scary. Crazy thing is, is that I can set the cruise at 155 and it will do it without a hiccup.

I cant wait to make it up there!

It is indeed an experience. Here the German's love to drive fast and maintain a high rate of speed. Does not matter even if raining. They still drive fast.

Oh wow, that's crazy! I bet that was a nice fine!

How high is the death rate due to accidents?
I always wondered about that.

Actually it is lower than anywhere in the U.S.

It is very expensive and time consuming to get a license for the Germans. Roughly 6-7 thousand to get a license and hours upon hours of driving schools. Not to mention a massive test. They take driving very seriously.

It seems like we get our licenses from a Cracker Jack box compared to what they have to go through. But their license is for life.

I hear that they have something like tours whereas people can come from other countries, rent cars like Porches and drive the Autobahn. True?

Ive heard the same thing. Also the rule is slow traffic keep right. kinda like we have in the US that no one follows... Apparently the road on the autobahn is something like 2 feet thick so there are no cracks or anything. As Vince once said "you know the Germans make good stuff" :)

Thanks Rob! Sure is fun!

Sure do. Anyone can rent a vehicle and drive the roads. Just make sure you have an international drivers license.

You can come over and rent a Porsche and drive the Nurburgring if you wish. Just make sure you stock your wallet with greens.

It is actually illegal to hang out in the left lane no matter how fast you are traveling.

The autobahn is very thick. When the Germans set out to do something, they over engineer it and over build it. This is why I prefer German products.

I have some great memories of driving the Autobahns when I would travel there form where I was stationed in the UK.

The one that runs between Munich and Salzburb and the one between Frankfurt and Ramstien were two of my favorites. The Autobahn/Autostrada that takes you south out of Munich into Austria and down into Italy is pretty cool too.

The two things that stood out to me beyond the speed is the incredible discipline of the drivers (Northern Europeans at least) and the fantastic condition of the roads. Nothing in the US comes close.
