so, after getting some great advice from other members and understanding what I've been doing wrong, my only remaining question? orange cutting pad or lighter for use with XMT number one swirl remover?

Depends on what you want to do.... XMT1 will not have a lot of cut at all (I have it)... so for me I would tend to gravitate to orange first. However, for soft paint I would definitely do a test spot with Orange, then one with "white"..... and compare.
