Wheel pitting

I've got a set of factory alloy wheels that have a clear coated aluminum ring around the outside. The issue is that each ring is starting to get light pit marks all around it that unfortunately polish just doesn't remove. Any idea's on how I can remove these? Is there something I should use to strip the clear coat and then polish them out?
