'13 VW GTI Opti-coat by Dave Bulgrin's Detailing

The owner contacted me after I responded to his post on the forum. He was interested in a polish and opti-coat. After some delayed scheduling on both of our ends we finally found the time to fit the car in.

Meg's non acid tire and wheel cleaner
Meg's APC
Iron x
Nano skin towel fine with ONR
M105 with LC orange
DP coating prep polish with LC white
Opti-coat 2.0
Meg's metal polish
Ultima tire and trim guard

I started with the wheels

Then on to a 2 bucket wash

Letting the soap dwell to strip wax

I followed the wash with iron x and auto skin towel to remove contaminates

After doing some test spots I found the paint to be pretty hard. The m105 and orange pad took care of the swirls. It wasn't removing some of the RIDS after additional passes but it was finishing out great.

This picture is after I went over the car with the DP coating prep polish with the white pad. This combo worked to remove some light hazing left by m105.

Still pretty new to opti-coat but I think the results were great. Unfortunately the sun was not out but the paint still looked so wet.

Looks good. My car looks just like that one, only I've got two more doors.

Couple of quick questions:

- The 105 finished out without any hazing? I was always under the impression that when using something on the agressive side like 105 you'd need to follow up with a milder polish to really bring out the gloss. That was my experience with UC and UP. UC looked good, but UP afterwords made it look great. I thought the DP was only a cleaner an not a finishing polish

- How did you clean the honey-comb grill work? I found it a total pain to clean and it traps water like crazy. I'm never hose washing my car again without my leaf blower handy and something to get into the individual holes.

After multiple test spots M105 was the only thing getting 90% of the swirl marks out. I did notice some hazing, mostly when I replaced the pads after each panel(not fully primed), but I found if on my final 1 or 2 passes I lightened my pressure it finished out really well. For the DP prep polish, it does only have cleaning abilities, but a white polishing pad will still have some polishing abilities. This allowed me to clear up the hazing. The directions on the DP bottle says to work the polish into the surface so I did 2-3 passes. I did check with some IPA after the DP just to double check the results but if the product works as advertised when I wipe it off that is a completely bare surface. I was very happy with this outcome.

Luckily I also used a leaf blower on the grille. I still when used a MF over my finger in each hole and a q-tip where I couldn't get with my finger. Not a fun part to detail!
