Contacted by the new owner of this 997 Carrera after he picked it up from the original owner. Pervious owner was SUPER meticulous in maintaining the car, which included years of receipts of having the car detailed every few months.....and they machine polished it every time, and it SHOWED. Paint was scary thin. The thickest reading was 77 microns and the car averaged 55-60 microns. After discussing the situation with the owner and how the thin paint severely limited our options, it was decided to get whatever correction was possible with the least aggressive method possible and then coat it with Opti-Coat Pro to add some precious material back and protect it for years to come. Ryan was out to help me get this job all complete in the single day we had available to us.

Products used:

Foamed with Dawn/CG Citrus Wash
Washed with Dawn/CG Citrus Wash
Sonax FE on wheels with Wheel Woolies and Swissvax Wheel Brush
Clayed with Meguiars Final Inspection and Blackfire Poly Clay II
Tires cleaned with Stoner's Tarminator

Correction was going to be severely limited because of the extreme thinness of the paint. We tried a very gentle combination and it worked better than expected. Menzerna 85RD (SF4500) on LC black pad with the Rupes on speed 3, going over it twice we got ~75% correction. After a wash to strip all polishing oils it was coated with Opti-Coat Pro for permanent protection.

Upon arrival, the issues were plain as day. Regular detailing is great.....unless the shop is full of hacks like the one the previous owner used every 3 months......

Finishing late into the evening prevented any sun shots, so we made do with the Brinkman Xenon light. Its far from perfect, but significantly better than when we started.

Looks awesome! Did you happen to take paint readings after polishing? I've always wondered how much is typically removed when doing a light job.

The amount removed was less than 1 micron. The gauge could not read any difference. Mission accomplished safely.

What was your process on the louvered section of the rear deck lid?

I struggled with that area on a recent project for a friend.
