I bought the leather masters car leather protection kit for my interor on my a6. I used it on the seats with no problems and tried it on the shift knob.. I believe some of the dye has come off

I read afterwards that the leather on the knob and wheel are different, which is why I'm guessing this happened

Any ideas? Can I get dye to fix this?

Could it be that since the shift knob sees a lot of traffic from your hand oils/sweat that it has already been removed prior and the dirt that was there was just covering it? So when you removed the dirt, you finally exposed what it really looked like?

very possible, I picked the car up second hand. I don't think the interior was fully maintained. However the sponge was turning grey, the color of the leather and when I wiped this came off revealing the patchy color on the knob

Due to the color on the MF towel I'm thinking you removed dirt/grime and now see the defect that was already there.

Don't hold me on this, I may be completely off. From the pictures it looks like coated leather. The coating possibly could've been deteriorated prior so when you cleaned it, the dye came off and transferred onto the towel. Kind of like when clear coat fails and you rub a towel on it, the color of the paint transfers on to your towel. Maybe the more experienced can chime in.

Also, from your MF picture, it looks like it removed a lot of dirt therefore revealing what it really looked like underneath. Kind of like when you strip off all the LSP from your paint and it reveals what it really looks like underneath all the makeup.

Should note the cloth used is what came in the kit, not a MF I believe. Feels like a heavy cotton towel

Is that grime just from the shifter?
