so a lot of older cars used to have a pull-in windshield where it was locked against the rubber gasket with a lock strip.

Supposedly, these rubber gaskets were indestructible because it was made of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). However that doesn't mean it doesn't wear down. On my 1990 3 series, I'm seeing some sort of wear in the inner seals that is pretty common in these cars.

specifically, it looks like it is bubbling up in certain areas and the affected area ends up feeling like sand paper.

has anyone seen this and successfully corrected this? I don't know where to begin.

might also be found in older porsches

EPDM is a pretty good rubber, I'm not sure of its UV resistance off the top of my head. Have you tried cleaning any of that white "blooming"? Sometimes that's some mold release although I dunno what that brown crusty stuff is. Try some APC on a MF and see what comes off.

Yeah, UV would be my first guess. If it was outside, there is the chance it could have been damaged by some chemicals but the same would not be used on an interior.
