Hand polishing a new car (prep for coating)

Hi all,

So the plan is to coat my car (Detailers Paint Coating) in a week or so.

I wanted some more opinions on this:

polish using Wolfgang TSR and Crimson finishing EZ Grip Hydro Tech hand applicators. Is this the best product for me... and are the applicators overkill. If so, would this suffice: Lake country ccs applicators, wax applicator, sealant applicator (http://www.autogeek.net/red-ccs-applicators.html)

Lake County Red CCS applicator pads.

I also have Detailer's Coating prep polish instead of the IPA wipe at the end (along with another crimson finishing pad).

The car is brand new and has not been washed yet. I ordered a CarPro Mitt along with Meg's Gold Class wash. I will clay the car after the wash/dry. Polishing by hand as listed above, then coat at the very last step.

Any thoughts/comments?

Those are great pads for "some" applications but not for a coating. They are very thick and this is good when you want to push down hard and have the foam spread out the pressure of your fingers.

When using for a coating however, the THICK foam will soak up a lot of your liquid coating and thus waste it.

Look at what other coating manufacturers use, a hard rubber block with a THIN piece of microfiber cloth. The thin cloth is to prevent wasting the expensive coating.

Make sense?

If you look at my article on how I've been applying it I chose the gold finger pockets as ONE SIDE is about 1/4" thin of foam, (your fingers are inside it so the liquid doesn't get to the other side. I also show wearing black nitrile gloves for safety reasons.

I don't think these coatings are a huge health risk but heck I see guy wearing nitrile gloves when they use detailing clay, so hey... better safe than sorry.

You're process looks good, I'm a huge fan of always doing at least one machine polishing step after claying but as long as you use lots of lube when you clay and do a good job you should be okay.


Also, if you have a CarPro Mitt, plan on buying a cat brush to de-matte it after it dries. I'm a HUGE fan of the CarPro and Dodo Juice Wookie's Fist Mitts, in FACT if you read the second edition of my how-to book you'll notice I only include a few wash mitts in my book and these are two of them. There's a reason.

You apply these products the same way to your car so the fact that the car in this write-up has single stage paint is a mute point. It is a cool car though...

lol I spent 3 hours reading all of the links you posted above. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the details. I think I avoided the yellow pocket applicators because of the lack of ratings on the site.. but I'll order those since you vouched for them

Heck I don't even know about "ratings" on the site?


I just use them because,


The foam is very soft and gentle to the paint.


I can place my 4 finger inside of them with a glove instead of trying to sandwhich an applicator pad between my 4 fingers and my thumb.


The side you use is thin so it won't soak up a lot of liquid.
