So along battle between the flex and rupes and I'm deciding to go with the Rupes 15 FTW

What pads do you recommend??

What's the point of the washer mod??

5.5" Microfiber and Foam Pads.

I personally use Meguiar's MF Cutting Pads and LC Flat Foam Pads (yellow, orange, white, black, blue, crimson).

The washer mod eliminates the interference between the shroud and the backing plate that was implemented by the manufacturer to create some friction in order to slow down the rotation of the backing plate. With the washer mod, the backing plate (and therefore the buffing pad) will spin much faster.

Have you used hydrotek pads with it

The crimson pad that I mentioned before is actually a LC Hydro Tech pad... that is the only Hydro Tech pad I own. It is relatively similar to the standard flat pads, but it feels more firm.

Any 5.5" pad will work as intended on the Rupes machine.

All I use on my Rupes polishers are Hydrotek pads and Rupes pads. Both work great, the Rupes blue pad is the Terminator.

I used a tangerine HT on my Rupes 15 and I didnt like it at all. Compared to the buff n shine pads. the HT pad skipped around alot on me. So i am trading off all my HT and sticking with only Buff n Shine pads

yea i use the low profile ones..compared to the green polishing buff n shine pad it just wasnt as smooth. Especially during start up and shut down is when it really wanted to bounce around

I am also thinking about getting the Rupes 15, do you have to do the washer mod if I use my current LC 5.5" pads or can I just attach the pads and go at it?

you can go right ahead with the pads you have.

The washer mod just disengages the safety feature that was built into the Rupes to keep the pad from spinning too fast.

Ah I see, just saw the video, so the washer mod makes it a free floating spindle like the PC/GG where as the factory setting is forced rotation like the 3401?

No. The way the Rupes is designed, the backing plate is supposed to make contact with the housing to slow rotation when heavy pressure is exerted. The washer mod disables this feature.
