Ok,
I wish I could show you guys a pristine after shot of this project. My first full car attempt at paint restoration. Long story short, I did not achieve a flawless finished product. I did achieve a heck of a lot better than it was. So I am happy with that.

My project had to be a Black Pearl Honda.
This car has had TWO rebuilds after baseball size hail and one wreck due to snow(the whole spare tire well had to be repaced) and has been driven pretty hard. One thing about the FIT, its a tough car and it runs like a top!

I had no one to extend a life line call and ask to come over for advice. ONe very nice Geek has sent me a phone # and said to ring him if I needed anything, Itwas Sunday and I didnt want to bother him. So it was checking AG for bookmarked threads.
Project start time / date:
Sat 8-3-13 approx 1130AM Temp hovering under 100 and above 95
Washed with dish soap to get off whatever was left on car.
-Took pics (still not that great at that part) Note all pads are 5.5 Buff and Shine Flat on a HF DA with a 5" plate.
-Started hood with Megs Deep Crystal paint cleaner on a black Buff and Shine (B&S) flat pad.
- I thought it did nice but I could really see the below surface defects.
-Next I went with the HD UNO on a white pad. I did my 5 or 6 section passes but could still see stuff, moved up to an orange pad and then a yellow. I bought the UNO because it was supposed to be good for a lot and just switch the pads. I thought it looked good a few times till I backed out from the tarp and into the sun.
-Broke out Megs UC went over it with a orange then UP on a white and blue. I decided to stop there b4 I went to far and applied a coat of UW and then a coat of 3M Performance synth (3MP) wax as my 2 LSP's. looks better than It was but not perfect.
LOTS OF cold water and AC breaks in the house. a few stops to get dinner for the kids, look back at the AG threads, and back to it.

I had the Less is More theory right. I know it was Technique and speed settings that were killing me. for the finishing of that night all I did was the grill, and L/R fenders. I just skipped the cleaner and hit them with the UNO on the white pad and they came out better as I got my pressure set better. 1:00 AM. I am beat, frustrated and my eyes are blurry.

I know the hood looks good in the bottom, but I guess I did not get close enough.

Sunday: Start time about the same. And temps are better. Only around 85 to 90 and a nice breeze every so often. Rig up the only 2 lights I have, get my ground foam pads, water ect.
Left and right front doors are pretty dinged up from rocks, doors and years. I experimented with 2000 grit wet on that big scrape and a few other RIDS. I don’t have touch up paint but wanted to see if I could get it looking better. A new day and a new feel for the machine. I decide to hit with UC since its in pretty bad shape. This time I am not scarred to crank it to 5. 5 or 6 passes, its working great! I am now happy, follow with UP and decide to just use the 3MP. I am now rolling. Finished Left side by 8:00 (another break in there for making dinner). Used same method on R side and roof. NOTE TO SELF; Next time start on the roof first!! For what its worth here is the sides and the finals. As I said, Its not perfect, but it is way better than before I started. I am really happy with how the two doors came out.

Thanks for looking. This car will not be taken care of lightly, its heading to Colledge with a freshman.

I find Honda's are the hardest to work on, I just did a black Accord this past weekend, ate my live. Lol
I think I'll go up on price when working on a Honda from now on.

It's always frustrating on your first attempt. Car looks great. You don't need to use the paint cleaner as a first step when polishing. With UNO you don't want to prime your pad in the traditional sense--just use 4-5 pea sized drops for your first section (don't rub them into the pad) then add 2-3 pea sized drops for each additional section. Clean your pad on the fly often and don't be afraid of high speeds and make sure you use some pressure.

I've had great success on hard VW paint with UNO using speed 6 on my GG DA-- 4-5 passes at speed 6 with 15 lbs of pressure then a couple passes at speed 4 with moderate pressure to finish down. After a couple of sections clean the pad, set it asside and use another pad while the first cools then after a couple of sections switch back to the first pad while the second cools etc etc. I do half the car then switch to another two pads for the second half. All with B&S orange pads. Your technique on softer Honda paint may differ a little, but don't be afraid of using higer speeds and some pressure. With the softer paint you may also have to do a finishing step with UNO on say a black or blue pad.

It really makes me feel good to hear you guys say that. do you think MF pads would be a better bet? I was considering some HD cut also. I really like the long working times since Texas is SO FREAKING HOT!! I also considered going to the pawn shop for the cheep rotary and a wool pad. Today I asked my daughter "Did you see your car in the sun yet?"
She said "Yes it’s really pretty now. Thank you". I know it will be swirl o matic and she is planning a lake trip this weekend,, it’s a all gravel rod! it will be white dust in every nook and cranny! Thank god for the TWRW rinse- less wash!! Getting to love that stuff! I may do a foam bath first and a hose off then follow with the TWQD solution.

Man thanks for the UNO advice. I was wondering if it was a good buy when I was having a hard time. Wish I had it b4 hand though LOLOLOLOLOL.

I have a HF DA, does anyone know the approx rpm at what speed? Ill re look in my manual I got with it, but dont recall seeing one.

Not exactly sure, but sounds like this is a DD and not a show car.

There are probably corrections that you can still see, but unless pointed out to the owner, all they will see is "pretty shiny paint" :D

This is what I have done and found it to be great, go to a car show and meet car guys, just for a meet and greet.

They had signs on the windows that said "Please Do Not Touch!" Lol

This is my 18 yr old daughters car. She did say she will try to get out to the lake in someone elses car :) She leaves for Coll. in 2 weeks or so. I wanted my girl to shine when she pulls into freshman parking. (Plus it was a trial by fire for me, I wanted to see what I could do for a real first time out full bore correction)

P.S. Did you see where this is the 2nd dentless repair of the car and what I did not say is its a 3rd roof (stock +2 new ones due to hail) 3rd windshield, hood, fenders and a few other things. Yes that is a regulation baseball in the middle. gives you a perspective.
I took pics of this last storm hail because people did not believe me. there was one the size of a cantalope but I didnt get a pic of that.

Sheesh (those are big ice cube rocks) I remember it hailing here in LA,CA once, it hailed for like 5 minutes and they were pea sized lol (was a kid back then)

Man those are some nasty hail stones. There was a big hail storm that went thru Minneapolis the other night, really tore up a LOT of car (and home) windows.

Yea we had that last storm about the 10th of May, and then the one before that was about 6 yrs ago. 2 new roofs in less than 10 yrs. No reason to pay for a 30 yr roof. :)
