I always enjoy a great station wagon discussion, and I was wondering if anyone here on AG are big fans of them.
In my opinion, it's unfortunate that the US has such a negative view of the station wagon, and as a result lacks a great selection of them. Nowadays SUVs, crossovers, and mini-vans dominate the roads that station wagons used to. I was born to this SUV, crossover, and mini-van world and never had the opportunity to see wagons in their glory days, and cannot understand the aversion to them. Yes, they used to be "uncool," but now they are unusual, and maybe hip? In the Euro car scene, anyone that has a wagon seems to get instant respect interestingly enough.
To me, a station wagon is the ultimate do-it-all vehicle. You can throw cargo, kids, bikes, and dogs in/on it and head just about anywhere. They offer car-like ride quality, handling, and economy, and really don't have any downsides other than the perceived notion of them being "uncool." I feel that very few people use their SUV to its fullest potential. There are people who do, those who tow and/or have large families for example, but many people do not fall into that category.
I'm planning on getting the new 2015 Jetta Sportwagen (or whatever VW ends up calling it for the US market) when it comes out. I'm prepared for many raised eyebrows from my peers, but I'll be the one laughing and enjoying every minute of owning, driving, and of course, detailing it. :xyxthumbs:
So does anyone else have any thoughts on these now-rare vehicles on our roads?
I've included pictures of the old-school station wagon, and what to me, looks like a "cool" wagon.
